Collingswood's Mike Campbell Wins District 28 Wrestling Title

Campbell plowed through the 160-pound weight class at the District 28 Wrestling Tournament.

Mike Campbell has wrestled in front of home fans dozens of times over his three years as a member of the Collingswood High School wrestling team. However, his performance at home on Saturday is one that will always hold a special meaning to him.

Campbell scored a 10-0 major decision victory over Audubon’s Devin McMonagle to capture a District 28 Wrestling Tournament title.

Campbell entered as the No. 1 seed in the 160-pound weight class and lived up to the billing. Campbell recorded a first-period pin over Kevin Stevens of Sterling in the quarterfinals, and followed with a second-period pin over Haddon Township’s Daniel Clemente in the semifinals. He faced little opposition in the finals, controlling his match against McMonagle.

There was a bit of disappointment for the Panthers in that Campbell was the only district champion. Alex Irwin (145) and John Deaner (220) were No. 1 seeds, but had to settle for second and third places in their respective weight classes. Their performances were, however, good enough to extend their seasons into next week's regionals.

The Panthers will have 10 wrestlers in total at regions. Joining the aforementioned threesome will be Donnie Daly (3rd, 120), Zane Chunko (3rd, 126), Colin Lex (3rd, 132), Shawn Clark (2nd, 138), Ayaz Ali (3rd, 152), Pat Miles (2nd, 195) and Billy Crowley (3rd, 182).
