Remembering Collingswood's Michael Landon 22 Years Later

Landon, who grew up in Collingswood, died July 1, 1991.

Highway to Heaven, Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie fans may be hard-pressed to believe it, but it's been 22 years since Collingswood native and beloved actor Michael Landon died.

Landon died July 1, 1991, of liver and pancreatic cancers in California at just 54 years old. Landon—then known as Eugene Orowitz—grew up in Collingswood and was a standout track-and-field star for Collingswood High School.

Although by many accounts Landon's years in Collingswood were difficult, partly because of a hard home life on South Newton Lake Drive, a monument and playset stand in Knight Park to Collingswood's most famous native son.

Legacy.com paid tribute to Landon Monday with a remembrance of another role of his: a teen werewolf, his film debut.

Just two months before his death, Landon appeared on The Tonight Show to play one last prank on Johnny Carson. Watch the video above for Landon's last sit in with Carson.
