Kubrick's "The Killing": 7 P.M. at the Public Library

Tonight's film, an early Kubrick movie, deconstructs the heist genre, says Movie Club founder (and Patch blogger) Robert Castle.

Rather than glorifying an elaborately planned crime caper and the daring personalities who would execute it, the 1956 film, one of Kubrick's earliest commercial works, deconstructs the genre.

"It's about what happens when people get in the way," Castle says.

Even in classifying The Killing as film noir—although it was released before the genre had even been so termed—Castle says critics reward Kubrick's instincts in breaking down the elements of the form.

The story is told in a nonlinear fashion, there's a femme fatale, and yes, there are bloody consequences for being caught up in such a crime, but in Kubrickian fashion, he manages to subvert the expectations of the audience, Castle says. Sterling Hayden stars.
