Panthers Wrestlers Take on Powerhouse Paulsboro Wednesday Night

No. 4 Collingswood is wrestling for its chance to advance to the Group 1 finals against top-seeded Paulsboro.

The Collingswood High School wrestling team knows exactly what it is up against tonight. The wrestlers know they are being given little chance of upsetting one of South Jersey’s true wrestling powerhouses. The team also knows the type of talent it possesses, and isn’t about to concede anything when the No. 4 Panthers travel to take on No. 1 Paulsboro. The pair will meet in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 semifinals at 7 p.m. “I think we have to all be confident that we can do it,” said sophomore Pat Miles. “We have to wrestle smart. They are obviously tough, but I think we can do it this time. I think we have a good shot of beating them.” Paulsboro has earned a reputation as one of the top wrestling schools—big or small—in South Jersey. …

Wrestling Comes Up Short Against Paulsboro

The Red Raiders rallied off seven straight wins to turn deficit into victory.

Thursday night, in the first few matches of the season, everything was going the way Collingswood High School's Panthers wrestling team had hoped. After a 9-3 win by Anthony Valianti over Zack Funk—at 195 pounds—gave Panthers a 15-9 lead over Paulsboro, the Red Raiders would forfeit at 220, to put Collingswood up 24-9. But it was all downhill from there. Paulsboro won the next seven matches on the night, giving the Red Raiders a 38-24 victory over their conference rival. “We battled tonight, but some things just didn’t go our way,” said Collingswood head coach Dechlin Moody. “Our young guys did a phenomenal job tonight, but I still think we could have won.” Alex Irwin started the night off in favor of the Panthers, posting a 7-5 decision …
