Moving up a weight class this season appears to be paying off for Collingswood grappler Tony Giancola.
Collingswood High School's Tony Giancola won his championship match at the Region 7 wrestling tournament Saturday, sending him to the state tournament next weekend in Atlantic City. Senior Giancola beat Cherokee's Alex Baider in the 113-pound match, 11-1 in a major decision at Robbinsville High School. Giancola had success last year in the 103-pound weight class, and found he needed to adjust his approach this season. “You can’t really wrestle the same in different weight classes,” Giancola told Collingswood Patch earlier. “Last year when I moved down, I was bigger than most kids. Update, 10:30 a.m., Feb. 25: Tony Giancola won his semifinal match over Shawnee's Jim Moody by a major decision, 15-0. Mike Campbell triumphs in his 160-pound match, while three teammates suffer pins.
Collingswood wrestlers went 1-3 Thursday during the opening round of the Region 7 tournament at Robbinsville High School. Mike Campbell won his 160-pound match in a decision against Mathew McDonald of Steinert. But his teammates Zane Chunko (126 pounds), John Deaner (152 pounds) and Anthony Valianti (195 pounds) all were pinned by opponents in their matches. The Collingswood results on Thursday were: 126 lbs: Justin McTamney (Bordentown) defeated Zane Chunko (Collingswood). Pin, 1:33. 152 lbs: AJ Nicholas (Cherokee) defeated John Deaner (Collingswood).
