Patch Picks: Hosting the Perfect Oscar Party

Party like the stars and treat your guests like the VIPs they are!

Roll out the red carpet: Head on over to The Quilted Nest and pick up a bolt of red fabric. It doesn’t have to be the fancy (and undoubtedly very expensive) kind they actually use at the Oscars; rather, any type will do. When you get home, roll the “carpet” from your front door all the way down to the street. If your carpet is running over grass, peg it down in as many places as possible to avoid any slipping. If it’s running over concrete, secure it with bricks on the sides (they’ll blend in). Your guests will love getting their moment in the spotlight! Play paparazzi: Grab a bunch of disposable cameras and assign each family member a guest to go after. As your attendees arrive, shout their first name to get them to look at the camera, …

Patch Picks: Mardi Gras

Want to stay close to home to party? Mardi Gras offers a host of creative activities you can enjoy at home.

Make a hurricane: Residents of New Orleans (Nola to the locals) really love their alcoholic drinks, so much so that drive-through daiquiri shops serve up all types of frozen boozy concoctions. In fact, pulling right up to the window and driving away with an icy beverage is the norm in The Big Easy. Besides drinking while driving, folks from Nola are also quite fond of stumbling down the street clutching giant, colorful glasses of an elixir commonly known as a hurricane. While visitors and residents alike drink it all year round, at no time is it more popular than during Mardi Gras. A mixture of rum, vodka and fruit juices, this drink is a refreshing way to celebrate the end of hurricane season (and is possibly a forerunner to your being …

Patch Picks: Great Meals Under $25

There are plenty of local spots offering cheap eats, from casual sandwiches to fine dining. Here are five options.

1. Your Own Home Have a gourmet meal that rivals those found in the finest restaurants—for under $25. Why not add excitement to the drudgery of grocery shopping by choosing to make the fanciest dinner you can dream up? Lump crab with Dijon mustard and haricots verts is on the menu at Le Bec Fin. Sounds complicated, but it’s simply lump crab meat with mustard and green beans. At the grocery store, here are the average prices you may pay for this meal: Jumbo lump crab meat, $7.50 for 4 ounces; 16 ounces of Haricot Verts, $3.40; 8 ounces of Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard, $3.79. Assuming one person could eat all of the crab, a few ounces of the green beans, and maybe a tablespoon of the mustard, this meal ends up costing under $10 per person. You …

Patch Picks: Top Five Innovative Businesses

Amazing things are happening locally, and these five innovative establishments are changing the area—and the world.

We have the inside scoop on these five local innovative businesses—thanks, in part, to www.NJEntrepreneur.com and the Rutgers Camden Business Incubator.   1. mVisum—200 Federal St., Suit 203, Camden— Several years ago, Praveen Dala's father-in-law suffered a heart attack. Luckily, his cardiologist was just next door, and was able to ride in the ambulance as well as perform a quadruple bypass on the man that same night. A survivor, Dala's father-in-law is still going strong today, due to the lightening-fast speed of his emergency care. Dala didn't factor into the idea for his company, mVisum, right away, but it was a conversation he'd had with the cardiologist that stuck in his mind. The doctor said, "If I could get critical medical …

After opening her first shop, on Tanner street, Michaels opened her current salon seven years ago. Her mentor, the late Bill Lamb—known to friends as Uncle Bill—taught Michaels everything she needed to successfully operate in the beauty business. "He worked to the beat of his own drum, and he was a master," said Michaels. "There should be a monument (dedicated) to him. He taught me perfection." Also a contributor to Zelda magazine, Michaels specializes in art deco hair design—…

Patch Picks: Top Chefs

South Jersey is home to some amazing chefs. Check out these local favorites.

1. Chef Alex Capasso: Blackbird and West Side Gravy, Collingswood This tattooed master of fusion cuisine is convivial, unconventional, and always spot-on when it comes to his food. Capasso's time is split blending the finest French and Italian culinary techniques at Blackbird, and frying up all-American juicy burgers at sister restaurant West Side Gravy. And since the restaurants sit side-by-side on Haddon Avenue, it makes a conveniently hectic—but happy—career for Capasso.  A "local boy made good," Capasso is a longtime Collingswood resident, who started out washing dishes in a cafe at age 15. He quickly fell in love with the restaurant culture. A celebrated chef since his early days at Misto in Cherry Hill and Max's in Cinnaminson, …
