New Year's means new resolutions. On every New Year's Day, I contemplate possible resolutions for the coming year. And subsequently, each year, I become disappointed with myself for failing to follow through with my goals. Are we setting ourselves up for failure by choosing resolutiond that are sometimes impossible to attain? Does anyone ever come up with truly appropriate, achievable resolutions for the New Year? Why do we do this to ourselves at the turn of each year? When did making resolutions become a tradition, and why? The act reportedly dates back to the early Babylonians, whose resolutions—while they did not model the resolutions of modern times—have shaped the tradition.
