Collingswood's Mike Campbell Wins District 28 Wrestling Title

Campbell plowed through the 160-pound weight class at the District 28 Wrestling Tournament.

Mike Campbell has wrestled in front of home fans dozens of times over his three years as a member of the Collingswood High School wrestling team. However, his performance at home on Saturday is one that will always hold a special meaning to him. Campbell scored a 10-0 major decision victory over Audubon’s Devin McMonagle to capture a District 28 Wrestling Tournament title. Campbell entered as the No. 1 seed in the 160-pound weight class and lived up to the billing. Campbell recorded a first-period pin over Kevin Stevens of Sterling in the quarterfinals, and followed with a second-period pin over Haddon Township’s Daniel Clemente in the semifinals. He faced little opposition in the finals, controlling his match against McMonagle. There was …

Three Panthers Earn No. 1 Seeds in District 28 Wrestling Tournament

Collingswood's Mike Campbell, Alex Irwin and John Deaner will be No. 1 seeds in this weekend's District 28 Wrestling Tournament.

The team portion of the wrestling season saw great success for the Collingswood High School wrestling program. Now it is time for the individuals to shine. The NJSIAA released the District 28 Wrestling Tournament seeds, and a host of Panthers wrestlers find themselves in great position to advance to regions. Mike Campbell, Alex Irwin and John Deaner headline the list as No. 1 seeds in their respective weight classes. Campbell (30-5) is the favorite at the 160-pound weight class with Haddon Heights’ Julien Faison slated as the No. 2 seed. The two grapplers met in January with Campbell scoring a 5-2 decision. Irwin (21-5), the No. 1 seed at 138-pounds, has won six-of-seven matches entering the tournament. Deaner (27-6) is the top seed at 220…

Panthers No Match for Red Raiders

Collingswood was eliminated from the wrestling playoffs by Paulsboro, 54-10.

The Collingswood High School wrestling team wanted to be at its best when it traveled to take on No. 1 Paulsboro on Thursday. Instead, it was the Red Raiders who were at peak performance. Paulsboro provided further evidence to why it is one of South Jersey’s premier programs, handling No. 4 Collingswood, 54-10, in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 semifinals Wednesday night. The Red Raiders will look to add to their title haul when they face No. 2 Cinnaminson, on Saturday. Cinnaminson advanced to the championship with a 30-25 win over No. 6 Woodstown in the other Group 1 final. The Panthers (22-8) were hoping an upset would be in the cards after hanging in with Paulsboro two weeks ago, despite being shorthanded. Instead, the Red Raiders won …

Panthers Wrestlers Take on Powerhouse Paulsboro Wednesday Night

No. 4 Collingswood is wrestling for its chance to advance to the Group 1 finals against top-seeded Paulsboro.

The Collingswood High School wrestling team knows exactly what it is up against tonight. The wrestlers know they are being given little chance of upsetting one of South Jersey’s true wrestling powerhouses. The team also knows the type of talent it possesses, and isn’t about to concede anything when the No. 4 Panthers travel to take on No. 1 Paulsboro. The pair will meet in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 semifinals at 7 p.m. “I think we have to all be confident that we can do it,” said sophomore Pat Miles. “We have to wrestle smart. They are obviously tough, but I think we can do it this time. I think we have a good shot of beating them.” Paulsboro has earned a reputation as one of the top wrestling schools—big or small—in South Jersey. …

Collingswood Wrestlers Down Buena, Advance to Group I Semifinals

Riding their heavyweights, the Panthers defeated Buena 45-22 in the Group 1 quarterfinals Monday night.

The heavyweights made sure the Collingswood High School wrestling team’s appearance in the playoffs will be more than just a cameo. Collingswood defeated Buena, 45-22, in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 Tournament Monday night. The Panthers were fueled by their bigger wrestlers, getting wins from all six weight classes from 160 through 285. Bill Crowley (182), Pat Miles (195) and John Deaner (220) each provided maximum points by pinning their opponent, while Forley Gunby (160), Mike Campbell (170) and Paul Lunney (heavyweight) earned wins by decision. Collingswood also picked up 18 points from Shawn Clark, Alex Irwin and Dan Havens. Clark (138) and Irwin (145) each had pins, while Havens was awarded a forfeit. With the…

Deeper Panthers Eager for Start of Wrestling Season

Collingswood figures to be one of the top wrestling teams in the Colonial Conference this season.

Led by a talented group of middleweights, the Collingswood High School wrestling team is ready to win now. Thanks to a thriving youth program, the Panthers are also set up for long-term success. The combination of the two has head coach Declan Moody pumped up about entering the winter wrestling season. “We are excited,” Moody said. “We should have a good year if we stay healthy. We have a lot of depth, so even if guys do get banged up we have other guys that can step in. It has been nice having these guys battling for positions.” Moody spoke in front of a packed wrestling room—something that has become the norm thanks to a feeder program that has grown substantially in recent years. Moody expects to have around 40 wrestlers to work with …

Campbell Ready to Pin Down Victories on the Mat

Medaling at an offseason wrestling tournament gave junior Mike Campbell a boost of confidence that he'll need in an expanded leadership role this year.

Over the summer, the Collingswood High School team took a trip down to Orlando. But it wasn’t Mickey Mouse that drew the Panthers' interest; it was the opportunity to compete against top teams around the country. Head coach Declan Moody called the trip a great bonding experience for his team, but joked that the results weren’t too friendly. “We got beat up,” Moody said. Well, not every quite everybody suffered that fate. Collingswood junior Mike Campbell flexed his muscles to the tune of five victories in six matches, earning a silver medal along the way. Campbell, who reached the Region 7 Tournament at 160 pounds last season, is hoping his successful summer is just the start of a big junior season. “That was really fun,” Campbell said of …

Spirit of Vengeance

Out to prove their Group II Tournament snub was a mistake, this weekend the Panthers will look to capture their first District II title since 1996.

After another stellar season somehow ended without a state championship berth, Collingswood High School wrestlers are going into this weekend’s District 28 Championships with one thing on their minds: revenge. “I see it as a chance to redeem ourselves,” said head coach Dechlin Moody. “I want to put [that frustration] in everybody’s face.” After graduating a bumper crop of senior talent, the Panthers went 25-9 on the year behind some new faces, exceeding Moody's initial expectations. Yet despite wins over some South Jersey Group II Tournament entrants, the team's invitation was once again lost in the mail. “We beat Haddon Heights by 10 points and they got in,” Moody said. “It didn’t make sense.” Moody is plainly hoping that snub will fuel a…
