NJ Mayors Group: Enough Is Enough on Illegal Guns

Mayors Against Illegal Guns wants stricter federal laws to rein in gun violence and access to certain weapons.

Mayors from across the Garden State converged on a North Jersey town today to rebuke federal politicians for their inaction on gun control measures. New Jersey's contingent of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an 800-strong coalition nationwide, voiced their frustration with Congress for not acting to ban assault weapons, make gun trafficking a federal crime or increase background checks on potential gun owners. The group met in Cranford, just as counterparts from Vermont to New Mexico held their own local meetings. "It has nothing to do with the Second Amendment; it's about gun violence," said former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio, who joined the group of local legislative leaders and law enforcement officials. Maley Joins Mayoral Coalition to Curb Gun Violence

The Collingswood mayor joined four others in Camden County and another 750 nationwide in calling for tighter restrictions on gun ownership.

Four Camden County mayors—James Maley of Collingswood, Chuck Cahn of Cherry Hill, Dana Redd of Camden, and Frank North of Merchantville—have added their signatures to those of more than 750 other mayors nationwide in seeking tighter controls on firearms in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT. Among other measures, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition is calling for criminal background checks of anyone who buys a gun and a review of the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.
