For ten bucks, you can support the Newbie School with this fundraiser that's bursting with as much charm as the borough itself.
When we initially wrote about the Collsopoly board game in our roundup of Collingswood ephemera making the rounds on eBay, it was a fun surprise to discover that copies of the Monopoly-themed board game—a one-time school fundraiser—still existed, somewhere on the Internet, waiting to be purchased. We didn't actually think there were any of these legendary artifacts still in circulation in town. But according to an announcement from the borough, a limited quantity of these babies are still out there, and one can come home with your for a measly ten bucks. At a Collingswood elementary school, a group of parents, volunteers and educators cultivated a teachable moment and grew a sustainable garden.
“Wouldn’t it be cool to have a club that picks up trash?” That’s the essence of the epiphany that struck Chloe and Riley Purdy on a trip to the Cape May Zoo about three years ago. “There were tons of trash and litter,” Chloe Purdy said. “The zoo guide told us the animals were in danger from the trash there.” The kids took their troubles to their principal, Mary Bezanis, of Mark Newbie Elementary School. A small chat evolved into a broader discussion about things they could do to be “greener”—plant more gardens, eat healthier and clean up more litter—and those impulses evolved into the Green Team after-school club. An endgame is unfolding in the library of Thomas Sharp Elementary. In between bites of soft pretzel, Eva Vanlaar, 9, is marshalling her forces against Lourdes Gonzalez, also 9. Seated at the head of their table, crossing guard Don Canning offers advice in equal parts to both. “This one’s got the potential to be a grandmistress,” he says, indicating Vanlaar. Canning knows talent. He used to play against ranked opponents in Collingswood back when there was an active chess club for players his own age. “I took my lumps and learned a lot,” he says.
