Self-Defense Class Teaches Confidence Through Confrontation

In an evening of free instruction, Andrew Faupel of Kenkojuku Karate helps Collingswood women learn the foundations of self-defense.

The statistics are overwhelming, says Andrew Faupel, sensei-owner of Kenkojuku Karate: Women are far more likely than men to be the victims of violent crime. As his grandmother, mother, wife and daughter all live in the same town, he doesn’t like those odds. But Faupel knows how to take care of himself—and how to teach other people how to do the same. That’s why Kenkojuku hosted a free women’s self-defense class Feb. 1. Together with the Collingswood Junior Women’s Club, the studio welcomed some 22 female students of all ages and levels of fitness for an evening of rudimentary instruction. “I know 84 percent of those attacks are committed without a weapon,” Faupel said, “so if you have some basic knowledge of self-defense, you can often be…

I Am Collingswood

I Am Collingswood: Andrew Faupel

Kenkojuku Karate owner Andrew Faupel explains how his practice embraces non-violence, discipline, and self-respect.

Collingswood's resident sensei, Andrew Faupel, discovered karate as a teen.  As owner and head instructor at Kenkojuku Karate on Haddon Avenue, he's been sharing his gift for martial arts for over 10 years. This week he tells Patch about how the philosophy he teaches his students extends beyond the doors of the dojo, fills us in on a new program for the littlest karate buffs, and gives us some tips on keeping ourselves safe when we're out and about. Collingswood Patch: What style of martial arts are you trained in and where did that style originate? Andrew Faupel: Primarily Shotokan karate. Shotokan came from Okinawa, Japan. Prior to that it came from China and if you go far enough back, from India. Patch: When and why did you start your …

I Am Collingswood

I Am Collingswood: Sarah Mello

Meet Sarah: a training manager, graduate student, purple belt in karate—and, most importantly, mom to 10-year-old Charlie.

Collingswood transplant Sarah Mello has a lot to juggle: a full-time job at the nonprofit mental health agency Resources for Human Development, master's degree classes at Capella University, karate, volunteering and raising her 10-year-old son Charlie by herself. How is she able to do it all? With the support of a great community. Patch: How long have you lived in Collingswood? Mello: I've been in Collingswood for six years. We moved from Seattle. I had taken a job in Moorestown and I didn't know anything about Jersey at all. I was doing all my research about the area online. Somebody from the company that I had been hired to work for said, “Collingswood is this up-and-coming place. You should check it out.” From 3,000 miles away I was …

Small Business of the Week: Kenkojuku Karate

Haddon Avenue-based Kenkojuku Karate has become a Collingswood martial arts staple.

Ten years ago, Andrew Faupel founded Kenkojuku Karate of South Jersey on a dare. As a 29-year-old dad, he’d been complaining to his wife that he was getting out of shape. Faupel reminisced about days when martial arts had been a bigger part of his life, and often mused aloud that he ought to have started a karate school. One day his wife shot back—lovingly, he swears—“Why don’t you shut up and do it?” And so he did. Faupel's goal was to develop a school focused on traditional karate and martial arts instruction, to adhere to certain guiding principles—specifically Dojo Kun—in karate and in life, and to deliver outstanding training services at an excellent value; all while promoting and exemplifying honesty, integrity, client satisfaction …
