Bowie Benefit Blends Bands, Brings Back Glam

The event is the brainchild of Collingswood residents Joe Bonaparte and Kevin Monko, and features a cast of thousands.

Joe Bonaparte got the idea last year at a Halloween party in Oaklyn. Musician Kevin Monko was providing the entertainment, leading a handful of different singers through the changes on some David Bowie tunes. Call it timing or atmospherics, but the performance was uncannily affecting, Bonaparte recalls. “A good friend of mine who’d schooled me in all things glam rock, coincidentally, was on his deathbed at the time,” Bonaparte said. “After that, I thought we should have a party all-things-Bowie where we do the entire Ziggy Stardust album.” Bonaparte, who runs the Collingswood Bike Share, is an avowed music lover who often christens his refurbished two-wheelers with rock n’ roll names. So it wasn’t much of a stretch to consider organizing a…

I Am Collingswood

I Am Collingswood: Joe Bonaparte

Collingswood Bike Share director Joe Bonaparte tells us how "Happy Days" and turning wrenches inspired his lifelong love of two-wheelers.

Joe Bonaparte is a self-taught bicycle mechanic who parlayed a passion for all things two-wheeled into a position as director of the Collingswood Bike Share. This week, Joe tells Patch how the Bike Share program works for Collingswood residents and shares the story of the '70s two-wheeler on which he began his love affair with bikes. Collingswood Patch: For those who may not know, can you explain how the bike share works? Joe Bonaparte: The Bike Share program was founded by [Collingswood Borough Commissioner] Joan Leonard and Rich Everill about four years ago. We get bikes that have been donated to us in various states of disrepair and some bikes that have been recovered by the police that no one has claimed for over a year. We get them …

Good News for all of us who bike to PATCO. The letter below is a response I received after recently having my bike tire stolen at PATCO COLLS STATION as well as the lack of bike racks for all of us who choose to bike instead of drive. As a follow-up to our earlier correspondence, we wanted to let you know that the camera in the area of the bicycle rack at Collingswood is working. We have ordered …   more ›

Bike Security Tips to Keep You on the Road

Collingswood cyclists, a few simple things can decrease your chances of having someone help themselves to your ride.

“‘I only left it in front of Wawa for like two seconds.’ That is the next thing people usually tell me after they tell me their bike was stolen.” That’s how Joe Bonaparte of the Collingswood Bike Share opens his email to Patch about bike theft. “As my friend Roland will tell you, if a professional bike thief wants your bike, he or she will get it,” Bonaparte writes. In a world where thieves carry battery-powered saws, he says, “theft prevention is all about reducing the odds.” “I have seen people steal the most uninteresting bikes, and in those cases it’s likely because the thief has been presented with an opportunity,” Bonaparte writes. In fact, through the Bike Share, he tried to build a theft-proof bike for a friend—a two-wheeled …
