Sobriety Checkpoint Coming Aug. 17-18

The state-funded policing initiative makes roadways safer, says the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Collingswood police have been approved for a DWI checkpoint next weekend somewhere in the borough limits, according to a release from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. The police action is funded by state grant money. "High visibility, efficiency of enforcement, and media attention have made checkpoints an effective tool in removing impaired drivers from the roadway, helping dramatically reduce the number of DUI arrests in recent years," read a statement issued by Jason Loughlin, a spokesman for the office. The primary goal of every traffic stop is deterrence, Anthony J. Vecchio, a Freehold, NJ lawyer who specializes in DUI defense, told Patch over Memorial Day weekend. Prosecutors Treating Linwood Ave. Fire as Intentional

A spokesman for the county office confirmed that a criminal investigation is fully underway.

The case work is being coordinated among the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Collingswood Police and Fire departments. "We’re going to list it as a fire that was intentionally set," says Collingswood Fire Chief Keith Davis. "There are multiple points of origin, so that helps to determine that it’s an incendiary fire." Next-door neighbor Bea Beauchemin, who placed the emergency call Sunday morning that alerted authorities …

Suspect Named in Daytime SWAT Bust

Taylor Bennett, 27, of Collingswood, was the lone suspect arrested in a May 11 police action, resolving a story the borough has followed for two weeks.

Camden County investigators have finally named Taylor Bennett, 27, of Collingswood, as the lone suspect apprehended in a May 11 police action. According to Jason Laughlin, spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Bennett was charged with possession of Oxycodone with intent to distribute. He allegedly had 49 pills on his person at the time of his arrest. The tactical raid was ordered at the county level, with Collingswood police assisting in the arrest. The only news of the activity was reported to Patch from a reader tip, which was later confirmed by Collingswood police. Patch readers near the scene also sent in photographs of the event. Information on the action was not made public by police initially, Laughlin said, because …

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not downplaying the dangers of Oxycodone or the misuse of other painkillers. The doc responsible for dispensing these prescriptions has a lot to answer for, as does Mr. Bennett.   more ›
