Collingswood's Mike Campbell, Alex Irwin and John Deaner will be No. 1 seeds in this weekend's District 28 Wrestling Tournament.
The team portion of the wrestling season saw great success for the Collingswood High School wrestling program. Now it is time for the individuals to shine. The NJSIAA released the District 28 Wrestling Tournament seeds, and a host of Panthers wrestlers find themselves in great position to advance to regions. Mike Campbell, Alex Irwin and John Deaner headline the list as No. 1 seeds in their respective weight classes. Campbell (30-5) is the favorite at the 160-pound weight class with Haddon Heights’ Julien Faison slated as the No. 2 seed. The two grapplers met in January with Campbell scoring a 5-2 decision. Irwin (21-5), the No. 1 seed at 138-pounds, has won six-of-seven matches entering the tournament. Deaner (27-6) is the top seed at 220…

Collingswood earned the 700th win in its program history Tuesday, inspired to a comeback victory by the rallying cry of "Do it for Dan" Trainer.
There are many individuals who played a part in the success of the Collingswood High School wrestling program over the last five decades. Coaches and wrestlers have come and gone, leaving an imprint in the program not soon to be forgotten. And then there was Dan Trainer. Trainer never coached at the high-school level, instead giving his time as a volunteer at the youth level. He helped turn hundreds of young children into quality wrestlers who reached high school at an advanced stage when it came to wrestling. Trainer passed away on Saturday at the age of 72. In his honor, this week Collingswood wrestlers wore T-shirts that read “Do it for Dan, the man who bled blue and gold.” The Panthers then came out and grabbed win No. 700 in program …

Collingswood, which hosts Sterling at 11 a.m., hopes to end its season on a winning note.
For many in the community of Collingswood, Thanksgiving represents a time to get out and support the high school football team in its annual showdown against Colonial Conference foe Sterling. For seniors such as Forrley Gunby, Thursday’s game represents one last chance to put on the Panther uniform and play for the school. When the Panthers and Knights meet at 11 a.m. at Collingswood it will be last game of the season for each team and the last game of high school football for many of the players. “It’s definitely going to hurt,” Gunby said. “We definitely had a lot of adversity this season and as far as I’m concerned we fought through it. I’m really proud of our team.” Things have not gone the way Collingswood had hoped this season, with …

Senior Forrley Gunby does it all for the Collingswood football team.
When Tyris Gunter intercepted a pass at the Lindenwold 15-yard line last week, the Lions’ linebacker had a clear path to the Collingswood end zone. There wasn’t a Panther within 10 yards of him. Yet, with each step closer to the end zone Gunter got, Collingswood senior Forrely Gunby got two steps closer to him. On a play he had no business being anywhere near, Gunby tracked Gunter down by the 5-yard-line and tackled him to the ground. It’s a moment that could have been overlooked by many—considering that Gunter did reach the end zone before being brought to the ground—but it was the perfect example of the type of player Gunby is. He never quits on a play, regardless of the situation, and that’s why head coach John McConnell considers him …

Deron Maxwell and Forrley Gunby combined for more than 350 yards on the ground as Collingswood notched its second win of the season, 14-12, over Lindenwold.
With his team backed up in its own territory and trailing by a touchdown, Collingswood High School running back Deron Maxwell rushed for what looked to be a 5-yard gain before he was surrounded by a trio of tacklers. Somehow, Maxwell broke away down the sideline for an 83-yard touchdown run. “I hit the hole and [the defender] tried to tackle me,” Maxwell explained. “I just [out]muscled him and went straight to the end zone.” And that was only the beginning. Maxwell rushed for a career-high 236 yards on 24 caries and Forrley Gunby rushed for 117 on 22 touches to lead Collingswood to a 14-12 victory over Lindenwold in Colonial Conference action, Friday. The win improved the Panthers to 2-3 and gives the team a much-needed mental boost after …

Just 3-6 a year ago, the Collingswood High School football program is hoping to build itself a contender in 2012.
Prior to winning an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling this summer, Winslow Township graduate Jordan Burroughs was highlighted in a commercial for CF Athletic that spawned the tagline “embrace the grind.” It caught on both locally and nationally and is certain to appear on the backs of T-shirts for many years to come. At Collingswood High School, football coach John McConnell has no problem admitting he adopted the Olympic gold medalist's line. He just hopes his players have bought into the message. “One of the things we are preaching is to embrace the grind,” McConnell said. “We have to plug at it and keep working hard and keep getting better. That was our main goal during the offseason, to keep getting better and better.” …
