Newtown School Shooting Victim Mary Sherlach Honored

The Sandy Hook school psychologist was among 26 people killed in the Dec. 14, 2012, school shooting. Her daughter and son-in-law live in Deptford.

The town that Mary Sherlach called home is honoring her in a special way.  Town council in Trumbull, CT, voted unanimously last week to rename the Trumbull Counseling Center after her. Sherlach, a school psychologist, was killed in the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, on Dec. 14, 2012.  Sherlach's daughter, Maura Schwartz, and Maura's husband, Eric Schwartz, are Deptford residents. Eric Schwartz is a regular freelancer for Patch, covering high-school sports in South Jersey.  Sherlach's husband, William Sherlach, attended the Trumbull council meeting Monday night.  Before the vote, First Selectman Tim Herbst said Sherlach gave her life for the students and teachers at Sandy Hook, and deserved the honor. Panthers' Maxwell Maturing on the Job

DeRon Maxwell is only a sophomore, but is showing flashes of leadership for the Collingswood High School football team

In his time as the head coach of the Collingswood High School football team, Jack McConnell has preached a sense of family and togetherness. When things aren't going well in the win and loss columns, unity keeps the team strong and plowing forward each and every week. The message of staying together and working to improve each week, regardless of the outcome, isn’t always an easy one for young players to grasp, but it is clear that sophomore running back DeRon Maxwell has bought in. “It starts in practice,” said Maxwell after the Panthers’ 14-7 loss to Haddon Township. “We have to work hard every day and we all have to stay together.
