The Collingswood girls basketball team bowed out of the playoffs, while a trio of wrestlers found success in the opening round of regions.
The Collingswood High School girls basketball team saw its season come to a close Wednesday night in a 39-25 loss to No. 3 Cinnaminson in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 quarterfinals. The Panthers were once again sound defensively, holding Cinnaminson in single digits in three of four quarters, but struggled to get into rhythm on offense. Collingswood was outscored 9-2 in the first quarter and never recovered. Ellie O’Neill, who scored her 1,000th point earlier this season, led all scorers with 11 points. Her sister’s Molly and Meghan scored six and five, respectively. Collingswood closes the season 18-10. REGION 7 DAY ONE: Three wrestlers moved into the second round of the Region 7 Tournament, while six Panthers came up short. …

The senior point guard scored points 1,000 and 1,001 just 33 seconds into Tuesday's contest against Sterling. Despite her milestone, the Panthers lost the tilt, 46-31.
With two sisters on the team and a mother who is the head coach, seeing a bunch of family members at a Collingswood High School girls basketball team is nothing new for senior Ellie O’Neill. But O’Neill became suspicious when she looked on the crowd Tuesday night and saw a bunch of other extended family members ready to cheer her on. “I was asking why my family was here and was wondering what the big deal was,” O’Neil said. She wouldn’t have to wait long to find out. O’Neill collected a lose ball on the defensive end, raced all the way down the court, and laid it in just 33 seconds into the Panthers’ contest with Sterling for her 1,000th and 1,001st career points. As soon as the ball went through the hoop, play was stopped, and her …

The Collingswood girls' basketball team continues to surprise, improving to 8-1 with a win over Sterling on Tuesday.
With each passing game the Collingswood High School girls' basketball team provides additional evidence that it isn’t just a team that has gotten off to a hot start. The Panthers success is very real, even if caught many people—including the Collingswood players and coaches—by surprise. “We have been doing a lot better than we even thought we would, and it’s a big confidence-booster,” senior Ellie O’Neill said. “I think everyone is working even harder now because we have so much potential and everyone realizes that.” The Panthers made another statement Tuesday night with a 41-34 win over Sterling in Colonial Conference action. With the win the Panthers improved to 8-1 and 5-0 in the conference. Considering the Panthers finished just a game…

Three O'Neill sisters are expected to be big contributors to the Collingswood girls basketball team this year. Their mom, coach Nancy O'Neill, says she too has to leave it all on the court.
When Ellie O’Neill and her sisters Molly and Meghan return home from field hockey practice, their mother, Nancy, is waiting for them with a host of questions about how each of them and their team is doing. When Ellie, Molly and Meghan return home from basketball practice, there are no such questions, because Nancy knows better. That’s what happens when mom is also coach. All three girls are slated to play vital roles on the Collingswood High School girls' basketball team this season, putting head coach Nancy O’Neill in the rare position of having three of the five players on the court being her own daughters. It is a scenario the veteran head coach has prepared for, but one she admits, comes with ups and downs. “Some days it’s really nice…

Before Tuesday's game against Haddonfield, Ellie O'Neill told her teammates how much every one of them mattered. They answered by potting eight goals in a shutout win.
Just before a big game against rival Haddonfield Tuesday, Collingswood High School field hockey captain Ellie O’Neill spoke to her teammates about something that had been on her mind in recent weeks. Captains often deliver speeches in Panthers’ athletics, so it wasn’t the fact that O’Neill spoke up that was significant, but rather the message she delivered. She told her teammates that every one of them has value to the team and that none stands above another. “I was thinking over the past couple of weeks about how when we play other teams it’s always ‘watch number four’ or ‘watch number three,’ but we don’t really have a star on the team,” O’Neill said. “We all trust each other, because we all know each other is equally good.” Moments …

The Panthers field hockey program is celebrating its 100th year this season—and with a strong squad, could make a title run.
Collingswood High School first opened its doors in 1910. Within two years the school had rallied enough girls to form an organized field hockey squad that would compete against other local schools, and in 2012, the program is still going strong. Panther field hockey is celebrating its centenary this season, a feat that is a credit to countless players, parents, coaches and administrators who saw the value in the sport and nurtured its growth across generations. “I think a lot of it is really just tradition and family,” said Collingswood coach Valerie Dayton. “We always ask the girls how many had moms, grandmoms, aunts, cousins, or sisters who played, and I would say between a third and half of the girls have had family that has played. "It…

In advance of the school year, one parent expressed relief that the meeting was conflict-free.
For the first time since April, the Collingswood Board of Education held a speedy, largely procedural and sparsely attended public meeting Monday night. There were no TV cameras, no emotional testimonials, no opaque allegations of wrongdoing. Elected officials outnumbered the crowd by a factor of nearly two to one. By comparison, it was almost ... boring. And all that was just fine with Collingswood parent Nicole Powers. “All the good we have here in our schools, I just felt so disheartened when I left here the last board meeting," she said. "This is not Collingswood. It disheartened me to see that this was what was displayed to the media when we have so much going on here." Powers praised the board in general and Garfield School …
