Campbell plowed through the 160-pound weight class at the District 28 Wrestling Tournament.
Mike Campbell has wrestled in front of home fans dozens of times over his three years as a member of the Collingswood High School wrestling team. However, his performance at home on Saturday is one that will always hold a special meaning to him. Campbell scored a 10-0 major decision victory over Audubon’s Devin McMonagle to capture a District 28 Wrestling Tournament title. Campbell entered as the No. 1 seed in the 160-pound weight class and lived up to the billing. Campbell recorded a first-period pin over Kevin Stevens of Sterling in the quarterfinals, and followed with a second-period pin over Haddon Township’s Daniel Clemente in the semifinals. Collingswood's Mike Campbell, Alex Irwin and John Deaner will be No. 1 seeds in this weekend's District 28 Wrestling Tournament.
The team portion of the wrestling season saw great success for the Collingswood High School wrestling program. Now it is time for the individuals to shine. The NJSIAA released the District 28 Wrestling Tournament seeds, and a host of Panthers wrestlers find themselves in great position to advance to regions. Mike Campbell, Alex Irwin and John Deaner headline the list as No. 1 seeds in their respective weight classes. Campbell (30-5) is the favorite at the 160-pound weight class with Haddon Heights’ Julien Faison slated as the No. 2 seed. The two grapplers met in January with Campbell scoring a 5-2 decision. Collingswood falls in District 28 tournament, but seven wrestlers will move on to regionals.
Leaving a legacy is a big part of high school wrestling. Certain individual accomplishments lead to the all-important “name on the wall,” and once your name is there, it does not come down. For three Panther wrestlers, Saturday was a day where legacies were made. Tony Ginacola, Dan Penissi and Alex Irwin all won individual titles for Collingswood and will move on to wrestle in next weekend’s Region 7 tournament. Also joining them next weekend will be Mike Campbell, who finished second at 160 pounds, John Deaner, who placed third at 152, and Anthony Valianti, who took third at 195. The Panthers see success on the mats at the District 28 tournament Friday; action continues on Saturday.
Collingswood wrestlers took their first steps toward advancing to regional matches Friday at the District 28 tournament. In all, eight Collingswood wrestlers move onto Saturday's semifinals. Top performers on Saturday will move onto the regional tournament next weekend. Still alive for Collingswood: Tony Giancola (113) Zane Chunko (126) Dan Penissi (132) Alex Irwin (138) John Deaner (152) Mike Campbell (160) Anthony Valianti (195) Bryan Pham (285) Match of the Night: Pham was tied 2-2 in the third period when he was able to wear down Sterling’s Eduado Castellunos and get the pin.
