Monday, Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m.—Collingswood Public Library Bob Pileggi will present on the fundamental aspects of mindfulness, and how learning to be "more present to ourselves and the other person we’re speaking with" can help us "more compassionately and effectively say what we really mean, and how we can listen more effectively to others."  Patch's own GLBTQ blogger Robb C. Most of the action this week happens early on this week, with the Planning Board and School Board meetings running head-to-head Monday night after a blood drive. The week rounds out with a pair of great movies, one for grown-ups and one for kids. 1. Kubrick's "The Killing": 7 P.M. at the Public Library

Tonight's film, an early Kubrick movie, deconstructs the heist genre, says Movie Club founder (and Patch blogger) Robert Castle.

The Killing isn't a typical heist movie, says Collingswood Movie Club founder Robert Castle. Rather than glorifying an elaborately planned crime caper and the daring personalities who would execute it, the 1956 film, one of Kubrick's earliest commercial works, deconstructs the genre. "It's about what happens when people get in the way," Castle says. Even in classifying The Killing as film noir—although it was released before the genre had even been so termed—Castle says critics reward Kubrick's instincts in breaking down the elements of the form. The story is told in a nonlinear fashion, there's a femme fatale, and yes, there are bloody consequences for being caught up in such a crime, but in Kubrickian fashion, he manages to subvert the …

Movie Club Treats Collingswood to Classic Cinema

Local critic Bob Castle believes in connections, conversations, and bringing people a taste of the new and unexpected.

Too short on cash to make a night at the Loews--or just can't fnd anything on the marquee worth taking in? The Collingswood arts community is getting a new monthly freebie with Movie Club. On the fourth Tuesday of every month, Collingswood resident Bob Castle presents a classic film in the the meeting room at the Collingswood library followed by a brief discussion. To call Castle a film buff almost seems insufficient. For a quarter-century, he's been delivering film criticism, whether in his own fanzine, top film journals, or the high school classroom in which he teaches. Castle was even invited to comment on the most recent DVD release of The Caine Mutiny. The idea for movie club arose from a night course on film he taught at Haddon …
