The Merchantville-based business is opening on Haddon Ave. in April. Community Development Coordinator Cass Duffey says it will fill a need parents have sought.
It’s officially official: Duck Duck Goose is coming to Collingswood. The business, which bills itself as a creative play center for children, will be shuttering its Merchantville location March 29, and moving into the corner property currently occupied by For Heaven’s Sake (the religious-themed gift and card shop is going out of business). Owner and Merchantville native Katherine Swann describes her business as a low-key play place for children, parents and grandparents. She wants Duck Duck Goose to be a place where “you can come in, relax, have a cup of coffee, chat with other parents, and you don’t have to be on top of [your children] all the time.” Swann and her husband, who have a 2- and a 6-year-old, said they wanted “to start a …

An empty storefront at Collings Avenue and the White Horse Pike needs a new tenant. What do Patch readers think should go there?
For more than 50 years, Crosstown Dry Cleaners stood at the entrance to Collingswood’s Collings Avenue business district. But its closure last year left a vacancy that has yet to be filled. In our latest Visions for Vacancy installment, we turn to you, Collingswood, to tell us what business you’d like at the corner of Collings Avenue and the White Horse Pike. The empty store—with large glass windows and parking in the rear (or sometimes the sidewalk, if you dare)—shares a building with Sorrento Pizza and a Laundromat. It’s just a hop, skip and jump away from a bank of other Collings Avenue businesses, including a hair salon, frame shop and restaurants with Chinese, Indian and Italian cuisines. The Heights of Collingswood across the street …

Collingswood has empty storefronts. You have ideas. Let's hear what you want to see added to Collingswood's business community.
Do you have a business idea that doesn’t need a lot of space? A small storefront on Haddon Avenue needs a new tenant—you tell us what should go there. The address in question is 661 Haddon Ave., former home to a travel agency. The new tenant would get a small storefront nestled between a Chinese takeout place and a hair salon. Put on your thinking caps—what do you want to see in this space? Something in the service industry? Something on the retail side? If you’re in the market to snap up the property, you’re in luck; it’s also for sale. For a cool $160,000, you get the storefront, an upstairs apartment and an unfinished basement, each approximately 400 square feet. Keller Williams is handling the property’s sale. (We’ll cut you off at the…

At The American Table, "Made in the U.S.A." is more than just a slogan to owner Cyndi Zippilli.
For as much as she enjoyed the ins and outs of business, Cyndi Zippilli never liked being an accountant. Crunching numbers was never as fulfilling as crunching dunkers, her Italian grandmother’s oversized coffee cookies. With a certificate in pastry arts and a Mediterranean love-food emotional connection, Zippilli admits that the spreadsheet game often left her hungry. “I kind of struggled with my career always, not feeling fulfilled,” she said. “There’s a piece of me that always wanted to have my own business.” Wednesday morning represented the culmination of that dream, as Zippilli cut the ribbon on The American Table, the latest retail destination to join the ranks of downtown Collingswood. The name is a statement of intention, she said…

Rusty McCarty thinks he's got a million-dollar idea in Extraordinary Ed, a new, a la carte learning center opening next week on Haddon Avenue.
“It’s never been done before,” says Rusty McCarty of his new business, Extraordinary Ed, which cuts its ribbon May 23. “I’ve lived in Collingswood for a while,” McCarty says, “and I looked around and thought, ‘What’s the thing that’s most frustrating about education?’ It’s inconvenient.” When a guy like McCarty says that, it makes sense; he’s seen a bit of the world. Originally from Lubbock, TX, McCarty taught in El Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, where he was the director of curriculum and instruction at the American School, before becoming the president, COO and creative director of a large, education-focused nonprofit headquartered in nearby Cherry Hill. But McCarty’s still never seen anyone else attempt what he’s trying to do with his new…

Here's a throwback: a Collingswood storefront that's being used for retail space.
In searching for a name that would encapsulate the business model of his Haddon Avenue furniture storefront, Reed Orem knew he’d struck gold when a friend came up with Dig This. It’s a moniker that perfectly captures his selection of vintage Danish modern and mid-century furniture as well as the way in which he acquired it; the reclamation of retro-cool. “If you see the furniture on Mad Men, that’s the kind of stuff that’s driving renewed interest,” Orem says. “It’s a lot different from hard lines and dark furniture, which seems to be popular.” Orem says he prefers a coffee-stained coffee table to one with a flawless finish because it’s a detail that demonstrates use. “You’re going to use it for the same purpose,” he says. “I like the idea…

Collingswood has empty storefronts. You have ideas. Let's hear what you want to see added to Collingswood's business community.
Update: Blue Moon Premium Olive Oil and Vinegar moved into the space in December 2012. ----------------- Visions for Vacancies is back with another available Collingswood downtown property. Put on your thinking caps: What do you want at 721 Haddon Ave.? We didn't go far for this week's installment, as 721 is adjacent to the 709-711 Haddon Ave. property we asked about last week. Suggestions for that property include a brew pub (and making Collingswood "wet"), a live music venue and running store. But 721 is a bit smaller, at 1,430 square feet—so probably not enough room for those ideas. So what do you want to see in the smaller space? The storefront has a bit of an, ahem, recent history since the previously tenant was forced out of town. …

Collingswood has empty storefronts. You have ideas. Let's hear what you want to see added to Collingswood's business community.
Welcome to Collingswood Patch's new feature, Visions for Vacancies. Collingswood has several empty storefronts and we want to know what residents want to see there. First up, 709-711 Haddon Ave. Located in the heart of Collingswood’s downtown, this store used to house the The Quilted Nest, which moved down the block. Now it’s empty and looking for a new tenant—to rent or buy, according to the front window sign. Jubili Beads & Yarns is a neighbor, as is Marlene's Dress Shop. What are you dying to see in Collingswood? A specialty clothing store? Perhaps a sandwich place? Another coffee place? Share your vision for this vacancy in the comments section below.
