Mourners packed the Collingswood High School gymnasium on Sunday to celebrate the broad impact of the late athletic organizer. He was 72.
An awkward silence fell over the Collingswood High School gymnasium as the Celebration of Life for late athletic volunteer, Dan Trainer, was about to begin Sunday afternoon. It was missing one crucial element. That silence was broken as Joy Trainer, wife of the late Dan Trainer, walked back in to take her seat, and was greeted with a huge round of applause. The stories varied when his former charges talked about the 50 years that Dan Trainer volunteered with Collingswood Little League, his 38 years of wrestling or 30-plus years of football. But they all shared common a theme: "He believed in me." "Everyone wanted to be on his team" remembered Claire Gunnison, who presented Joy Trainer with a flag once flown over the U.S. Capitol Building …

The late youth wrestling program coordinator was beloved of many parents, educators and coaches in Collingswood. His viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
A viewing will be held Sunday morning for the late Daniel A. Trainer, a man who Collingswood will remember not only as a pillar of the community, said high school athletic director Ronald Hamrick, but as the biggest part of its successful tradition of youth wrestling. "He’s a legend in Collingswood; he’s like a father to me," Hamrick told Patch Wednesday, his voice brimming with emotion. "I’ve known him for 29 years. How he’s influenced so many kids is pretty impressive." According to an obituary published by Foster-Warne Funeral Home, Trainer ran the youth wrestling program in Collingswood for 39 years, dedicated 50 years to the Collingswood Little League, and spent 30 seasons with the Collingswood Football program. Trainer was also the …

Collingswood junior John Deaner is succeeding two weight classes above his original slot.
Weighing in at around 180 pounds, Collingswood High School junior wrestler John Deaner is the quite the wrestler in the the 182-pound weight class. As it turns out, he’s not too bad wrestling at 200 either. Wrestling two weight classes up at the Collingswood Duals this weekend, Deaner went 3-0, recording 4-1 and 5-0 decisions as well as a second-period pin. His efforts helped the injury-ridden Panthers place second in the tournament. “He had a really good day,” Collingswood coach Dechlin Moody said. “He stepped up big for us.” Because the Panthers have been hit so hard by injuries this season—five starters are currently out of the lineup—Deaner has spent little time in his natural weight class. The junior has wrestled at 182 just twice, …

Collingswood figures to be one of the top wrestling teams in the Colonial Conference this season.
Led by a talented group of middleweights, the Collingswood High School wrestling team is ready to win now. Thanks to a thriving youth program, the Panthers are also set up for long-term success. The combination of the two has head coach Declan Moody pumped up about entering the winter wrestling season. “We are excited,” Moody said. “We should have a good year if we stay healthy. We have a lot of depth, so even if guys do get banged up we have other guys that can step in. It has been nice having these guys battling for positions.” Moody spoke in front of a packed wrestling room—something that has become the norm thanks to a feeder program that has grown substantially in recent years. Moody expects to have around 40 wrestlers to work with …

Medaling at an offseason wrestling tournament gave junior Mike Campbell a boost of confidence that he'll need in an expanded leadership role this year.
Over the summer, the Collingswood High School team took a trip down to Orlando. But it wasn’t Mickey Mouse that drew the Panthers' interest; it was the opportunity to compete against top teams around the country. Head coach Declan Moody called the trip a great bonding experience for his team, but joked that the results weren’t too friendly. “We got beat up,” Moody said. Well, not every quite everybody suffered that fate. Collingswood junior Mike Campbell flexed his muscles to the tune of five victories in six matches, earning a silver medal along the way. Campbell, who reached the Region 7 Tournament at 160 pounds last season, is hoping his successful summer is just the start of a big junior season. “That was really fun,” Campbell said of …

Tony Giancola can stake his claim in the argument of best Collingswood wrestler with a strong showing in this weekend's state tournament.
Legacy. It drives a high school wrestler to be great over the course of his four-year career. Getting your name on the wall is something that can never be erased. Winning districts, regionals, getting 100 wins, winning and placing in states are the only ways to be immortalized in high school wrestling. For Collingswood senior Tony Giancola, most of the aforementioned list has been accomplished. He is a three-time District 28 champion, only the sixth Panther in Collingswood’s storied wrestling history to accomplish the feat. He earned his 100th win this season and holds a career record of 113-35, the third most wins in Panther history. Three more wins this weekend will move him up to second place on Collingswood’s all-time list. And …

Collingswood falls in District 28 tournament, but seven wrestlers will move on to regionals.
Leaving a legacy is a big part of high school wrestling. Certain individual accomplishments lead to the all-important “name on the wall,” and once your name is there, it does not come down. For three Panther wrestlers, Saturday was a day where legacies were made. Tony Ginacola, Dan Penissi and Alex Irwin all won individual titles for Collingswood and will move on to wrestle in next weekend’s Region 7 tournament. Also joining them next weekend will be Mike Campbell, who finished second at 160 pounds, John Deaner, who placed third at 152, and Anthony Valianti, who took third at 195. Zane Chunko will also be wrestling next weekend after finishing third at 126. For Giancola, a 16-3 major decision gave him his third district title. The senior …
