Sophomore quarterback Jordan Wallace is hoping for big things in the second half of the Panthers' season.
As a first-year starting varsity quarterback, Collingswood High School sophomore Jordan Wallace has at times had that wide-eyed look to him on the field this season. As Wallace gets more reps under center, however, he's really starting to see things. The Panthers spent the bye week cleaning up an offense that has sputtered through four games tallying a 1-3 record. Head coach Jack McConnell said part of the early struggles can be linked to an inexperienced offensive line that has left added pressure on his young quarterback. As the line continues to come together, he believes Wallace’s play will start to blossom. “He’s starting to see his receivers a little better,” McConnell said. “We are struggling a little bit with our pass protection, …

Collingswood got its first victory of the season with a late touchdown against Overbrook.
Collingswood 6, Overbrook 0 After letting an opportunity slip away last weekend against Haddon Township, Collingswood took it down to the wire against Overbrook to notch its first victory of the season. The Panthers got a fourth quarter touchdown on a pass from Jordan Wallace to Steve Copeland, and that was all they needed in the 6-0 win. Paulsboro 42, Haddon Township 13 The Red Raiders poured on the offense at home, opening up a 21-6 halftime lead en route to the blowout win over Haddon Township. Zack Funk threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, De'Shaun Burgess scored twice and Riseeq Sease added a little excitement with an 81-yard kick return for a score. Haddon Township found a little drama of its own on a 90-yard TD pass from …

DeRon Maxwell is only a sophomore, but is showing flashes of leadership for the Collingswood High School football team
In his time as the head coach of the Collingswood High School football team, Jack McConnell has preached a sense of family and togetherness. When things aren't going well in the win and loss columns, unity keeps the team strong and plowing forward each and every week. The message of staying together and working to improve each week, regardless of the outcome, isn’t always an easy one for young players to grasp, but it is clear that sophomore running back DeRon Maxwell has bought in. “It starts in practice,” said Maxwell after the Panthers’ 14-7 loss to Haddon Township. “We have to work hard every day and we all have to stay together. It’s all about staying together.” That loss was a tough pill for Maxwell and his teammates to swallow; a …

A pair of ill-timed, third-quarter penalties cost the Panthers two defensive stands, opening the door for Haddon Township to rally back 14-7.
Moments after scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, the Collingswood High School football team put itself in position to get the football right back, twice forcing Haddon Township into third downs. Twice the Panthers committed penalties. The mistakes proved costly as the Hawks put together a 69-yard drive—aided by 35 yards in Collingswood penalties—capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by Dan Clemente for the winning score in a 14-7 victory Saturday. After sophomore DeRon Maxwell's 10-yard touchdown run, the Panthers were ready to drop the hammer, but a pair of personal foul penalties and an offside call kept the Hawks' ensuing drive alive as they marched down the field and answered right back. “Haddon Township did a nice …

Just 3-6 a year ago, the Collingswood High School football program is hoping to build itself a contender in 2012.
Prior to winning an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling this summer, Winslow Township graduate Jordan Burroughs was highlighted in a commercial for CF Athletic that spawned the tagline “embrace the grind.” It caught on both locally and nationally and is certain to appear on the backs of T-shirts for many years to come. At Collingswood High School, football coach John McConnell has no problem admitting he adopted the Olympic gold medalist's line. He just hopes his players have bought into the message. “One of the things we are preaching is to embrace the grind,” McConnell said. “We have to plug at it and keep working hard and keep getting better. That was our main goal during the offseason, to keep getting better and better.” …

Collingswood will remain in Group 2, which welcomes Cedar Creek and Maple Shade as new athletic opponents.
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) is rolling out a revamped divisional classification this year, adding in a fifth grouping for high school football. The new division will include the big boys of South Jersey athletics, larger high schools with populations three and four times that of Collingswood, including Washington Township, Vineland, Toms River North and Cherokee. The Panthers are unaffected by the re-shuffling, and will remain in Group 2. Collingswood High School athletic director Ron Hamrick is likewise unfazed by the changes. "Most of the titles come from the Colonial Conference," Hamrick says, which includes schools in both Groups 1 and 2. "You name the sport, the Colonial Conference is right there…
