Zoubek No Cream Puff, but Pulling out of the Biz

The former Duke basketball star shutters his Haddonfield bakery six months after opening it.

Brian Zoubek never experienced the sweet taste of success—at least not in the latest chapter of his young life. The 24-year-old, Duke NCAA basketball champion and Haddonfield Memorial High School standout opened a gourmet cream puff shop in July 2012 with the fanfare of national media after a Haddonfield Patch article went viral. But a plain sheet of white paper taped inside the front window of Dream Puffz Creations, his Haddon Ave. bakery, spelled out an untimely epitaph this week. "Unfortunately, we are now closed for the time being," the sign read. "Thank you for all your support and business..." The costs of running a business are astronomical. Most people fail to plan at all, let alone plan well. Methinks this was his way of bowing out gracefully. I think this was less about "life direction" and more about bleeding money. Between the food costs, utilities, insurance, salaries, and rent....you'd have to sell a helluva lot of cream puffs to cover that nut each month!   more ›

Duke Center Brian Zoubek to "Cream" Competition

The 7-footer from Haddonfield will open a pastry shop next to Bread Board Plus on Haddon Ave.

Brian Zoubek likes cream puffs. You got a problem with that? If you did, it's not likely you would tell him to his face. For starters, you would likely have to stand on a ladder to do it. Zoubek is 7-foot-1 and weighs about 265 pounds. He was a standout at Duke and went out a winner, when the Blue Devils beat Butler for an NCAA basketball championship in 2010. He was a local legend in Haddonfield before that as a leader of the Haddonfield Memorial High School basketball team and the New Jersey State Player of the Year in 2006. A back injury prevented him from playing in the NBA, but Zoubek is eager to turn the page on the next chapter of his life. Omg. Why are people still obsessing over the Brian and Blake issue. Getnover it. Recruited? No. Blake Wilson' mother taught at Haddonfield for 33 years and was their girls basketball coach for 12 years until she had Blake. His brother Sean played there prior to Blake.
