The Collingswood Foodies

Collingswood Spring Restaurant Week: Menus and Specials

Who's participating in the multi-course prix fixe week? We've got the list here.

Collingswood Restaurant Week starts Sunday, and what a great week for “foodaholics” like us. Not only are we fans of the food itself, but also the creativity and culture it brings to town.  For the unfamiliar, Collingswood Restaurant Week models itself after Philadelphia’s Center City version, where participating fooderies create multi-course, prix fixe menus ranging from $25-35 per person. Restaurant week is a celebration of food: an opportunity for chefs to flaunt their culinary creativity, and diners to experience something special. Although food options may sometimes include items from a restaurant’s regular menu, oftentimes chefs choose to have fun and create limited and exclusive dishes. For example, Ecuadorian grill El Sitio’s …

A Food Columnist Bids Farewell

As he hangs up his dining utensils, Dave Valiante offers his parting thoughts on the restaurant scene in Collingswood and the surrounding area.

Last week, I said goodbye to one of my favorite TV shows, 30 Rock, as they themselves bid farewell to the audience that supported them through seven slapstick and hilarious seasons. By the nature of show business, television shows rarely get a chance to say a proper goodbye. If its ratings are good enough, the network will typically renew a show until it inevitably becomes a parody of itself, viewers abandon ship, and the show goes out with a whimper. 30 Rock was afforded the unique opportunity to go out on its own merit, to close Tina Fey’s vision the way she intended. I bring this up because I, too, am saying farewell. Please, hold your gasps. It’s true. Your beloved food columnist is packing up his keyboard and hitting the road, onto …

Business Anniversaries in the Borough: Part I

As Collingswood wishes a happy birthday to four of its local (non-restaurant) businesses this month, Patch considers the successes and challenges that comprise their stories.

There must be something about that fall air, because October seems to be the anniversary month for Collingswood businesses. No fewer than four local establishments celebrated another year of operating in the borough this month—All Fired Up, Verde Salon, CAM-Tech Computers and The Candy Jar—and more than a few will join their numbers next year, including Vitality Fitness Too, The American Table, and Collingswood Health Recovery. “I think the economy is on the comeback, and we’ve been primed,” said Mayor James Maley, who helped All Fired Up celebrate its 15th year of business by reading The Monster at the End of This Book to children in the store Wednesday morning. “In the next couple months, I don’t think there’s going to be an empty store …

I am glad business is picking up but I am anticipating a 3-D model of the "new" Lumberyard. Since I am funding it, I would also like a letter from the Mayor that congratulates me for my venture! Glad they are doing something about it and I wish the best but I demand TRANSPARENCY on every step of the way. I believe that we all should.   more ›

Bistro di Marino Owner: 'I Want to Be a Good Neighbor'

Collingswood native Jimmy Marino says businesses like his contribute to improving property values, and he will work with his neighbors to improve conditions on the block.

After their neighborhood concerns became the talk of the town at last week’s commissioners meeting, it seems the residents of Gorman Avenue won’t have to wait long for results. According to Bistro di Marino owner and Collingswood resident Jimmy Marino, a sit-down with Collingswood Police Chief Richard Sarlo put key issues on the table, and cleared the way for a better relationship moving forward. “We’ve had some conversations with the chief of police, and I think we’ve resolved it,” said the restaurateur, who added that issues among residents and business owners “are all the products of a successful town.” In the interest of keeping the peace, Marino says, he’s taken a couple of extra steps that he “technically didn’t already need to take…

I am just curious what happens when you go into your yard........if you had a neighbor right nest door that had a party daily I think you would be complaining to someone. Well that is what it is like for the people who lived there prior to this restaurant, is there something you don't get about that......   more ›

Check your Town Crier for the Blue and Gold card, which unlocks special shopping discounts for residents.

Collingswood residents should expect a passport to savings in the latest borough mailer today, as the town rolls out resident shopper discount cards. Each copy of the Town Crier's May 2012 edition will include a Blue & Gold card that provides incentives for Collingswood households to support their local businesses. Enjoy the Weather at Bistro di Marino

Our food columnist sampled the Chef's Menu at Bistro di Marino.

Have you been outside lately? This weather is astounding. Spring showed up in January and summer is pretty much here. What are you doing about it?  Traditionally, Fire Up the Grill Season doesn’t start until Memorial Day weekend, but that’s no reason you can’t find other ways to eat outside and enjoy this amazing weather. That’s where Bistro di Marino steps in. They’ve opened their courtyard for the summer, and the setting is magnificent. Streams of golden lights, tiki torches, a beautiful stone fountain; if there’s a more beautiful, romantic spot to eat in Collingswood, I haven’t found it yet. Bistro di Marino, if you haven’t eaten there, falls on the casual side of the gluttonous fence of Italian eatery in Collingswood. That’s not to …

I've eaten here a few times and every time I go they make me feel like family. And if you don't have time to sit down and eat a proper meal, swing over to Bistro To Go and get some of their awesome food to go. Great place, great atmosphere…   more ›

Restaurants Dish on New Outdoor Dining Regulations

Restaurant owners and managers discuss the borough's tightened outdoor dining regulations.

Editor's Note: The borough's amended outdoor dining regulations were not yet available in written form at the time this story was written. It's since been confirmed all existing restaurants will be grandfathered into this amendment, and will be unaffected by changes. On Monday, June 20, Commissioners Joan Leonard and Mike Hall held a special meeting, during which amendments to the borough's outdoor dining regulations were approved.  The official amended ordinance states that all restaurants offering outside dining must, "demonstrate that a minimum of 5 feet will be available for pedestrian traffic," around the outdoor area. This amendment, according to the document, was created to promote pedestrian accessibility—allowing patrons to push …
