The garland's come down, and the summer dollars are months away. So what are borough businesses doing to drive traffic in the winter?
Look around your favorite Haddon Avenue shops these days, and you might be surprised at what’s in their inventories. It’s not that they’re carrying anything unusual. But they are carrying more and different items, sharing more products among themselves, and fitting out their displays with products from their neighbors. Like that mint green dress that perfectly matches the swing-arm lamp in the window of Dig This? Surprise, it’s from Frugal Resale (whose monthly ladies night is catered by neighbors at Casona and The Candy Jar). Picking up a bottle or two of olive oil at Blue Moon? You might also go home with a handmade dipping tray produced by local artist Eric Wolff. This kind of cross-promotion helps sustain the flow of business in the …

Some businesses thrive and others die in the boom-or-bust cycle of Haddonfield storefronts. What lessons, if any, do these extremes hold for Collingswood retailers?
To borrow a well-worn phrase, these could be the best of times and the worst of times for Haddonfield businesses. Look no further than Kings Highway East to see why. Here, after 31 years, Wiseley Jewelers is closing its doors. Owner Stephen Wiseley—whose son, Jason, owns the Bread Board Plus on Haddon Avenue—plans to retire in Colorado. He called the closing a "lifestyle" choice, and said he'd love to sell the storefront, but hasn't yet. "We've had a strong year," Stephen Wiseley said. "A couple of years ago things were rough, but we're going out on top." Even so, Wiseley is the fourth jeweler on Kings Highway to close this year (the others are Yampell's, Cabnet Goldsmiths and Biefield's). Yampell's Jewelers had operated on Kings Highway …

As Collingswood wishes a happy birthday to four of its local (non-restaurant) businesses this month, Patch considers the successes and challenges that comprise their stories.
There must be something about that fall air, because October seems to be the anniversary month for Collingswood businesses. No fewer than four local establishments celebrated another year of operating in the borough this month—All Fired Up, Verde Salon, CAM-Tech Computers and The Candy Jar—and more than a few will join their numbers next year, including Vitality Fitness Too, The American Table, and Collingswood Health Recovery. “I think the economy is on the comeback, and we’ve been primed,” said Mayor James Maley, who helped All Fired Up celebrate its 15th year of business by reading The Monster at the End of This Book to children in the store Wednesday morning. “In the next couple months, I don’t think there’s going to be an empty store …

Collingswood, like many other municipalities in the area, is doing its part to get a taste.
There are many reasons to shop, visit and party in downtown Collingswood, but among them, the U.S. Rowing Club national championships may be the most overlooked. It’s also the one with the greatest potential economic impact to the borough. Guests with Ivy League bank accounts and out-of-town license plates bring heaps of summer dollars into the area, and business owners are getting a little push from their local governments to get a taste however they can. In addition to Second Saturday, coinciding with the rowing competition this weekend are the Haddonfield Fine Art and Crafts Festival, an annual event celebrating its 20th year, and the Collingswood Sidewalk Sale, which borough officials admit is on a dry run. Kim Raiguel, who manages All…

Collingswood has a parking map here: http://www.collingswood.com/getting-here , but it doesn't have the kiosks on it With you on the hours though. I love Collingswood and know lots of folks there (including Reed) but I would find myself so often trying to go to a store and finding it closed that I kind of just gave up trying to shop downtown.   more ›
