Collingswood Calendar: Bike Share Benefit, Bakery Opening, Coffee & Shakespeare

Plus: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Collingswood Middle School, a Small Business Expo, and a day of service for Casona.


On Tuesday, November 12, The Diva Duo—sopranos Melissa Perry and Sharon Rose Derstine—will hold a benefit performance for Perry's daughter, 10-year-old Collingswood resident Sara Ann Kronrot, who is battling cerebral palsy.

Two performances will be given at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the Water Works Restaurant in Philadelphia. Perry and Derstine will perform a musical program directed by Sara Ann's father, Hugh Kronrot. Fixed-price dinners available upon request.

Also, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, the borough welcomes its newest business, as the Philadelphia-based Sweet Freedom Bakery takes its vegan repertoire across the bridge to Jersey. Stop by the new location at 577 Haddon Avenue and say hi.

Finally, on Tuesday, there's another meeting of the organizers of the Collingswood Food Co-op. Stop by the Community Center at 6 p.m. and talk with some of the ground-floor organizers who are working to get the all-volunteer effort off the ground. On Wednesday, November 13, it's time for coffee and Shakespeare, as Larry Beck and Michelle Quirk co-host a free discussion of The Tempest at the Collingswood Senior Community Center (30 W. Collings Avenue) from 7 to 8 p.m. Coffee and snacks will be served.

On Thursday, November 14, the Scottish Rite Ballroom will host the Camden County Small Business Expo. Come get a look at the services available for your small business. Get in free with business attire and a business card. Call 856-667-1600 for more info.

At 10 a.m., the Collingswood Public Library will offer story time for three-, four-, and five-year-olds. Children will take home a small craft, and coffee is provided for parents. Register with Carol or Dot at 856.858.0649.

Then, at 7 p.m., it's opening night for the Collingswood Middle School production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The show runs at the middle school from Thursday through Saturday with a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.

Friday, November 15, is Tiny Tot Story Time at the Collingswood Public Library. Parents of 18 to 35-month-old children can bring them out for stories, finger plays, songs, and playtime. Call Carol or Dot at 856-858-0649 to sign up.

Then, at 8:30 p.m., see Alexis Cunningham at Grooveground Fridays Live. The young singer boasts an accomplished and expanding resume. Check out some of her tunes here.

Saturday, November 16, you should be hanging out at the Scottish Rite Theater for the 2013 Beef, Beer, Bikes and Bowie event ($25 general admission, $30 for preferred seating). The concert is an all-ages, top-to-bottom glam rock spectacle for the benefit of the Collingswood Bike Share.

If you haven't gotten your tickets yet, call the Scottish Rite box office (856-858-1000), stop by Collingswood Borough Hall (856-854-0720), or Frugal Resale (856-858-0700).

There's also the annual roast beef dinner at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (839 Haddon Avenue). The menu includes prime roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, a salad bar, and dessert.

Seating times are 5 and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $6 for children aged five to 11 (four and younger eat free). Reserve your spot at 856-858-0491 or holytrinity1@verizon.net.

Saturday is also a Knight Park cleanup day. Volunteers aged 12 and older are needed from 9 a.m. to 12 noon to plant trees, turn over soil, compost, and other gardening activities. RSVP to Commissioner Leonard at jleonard@collingswood.com.

Finally, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., liberti church Collingswood is organizing a community day of service for Casona of Collingswood, the recently closed Cuban restaurant in town.

The property is up for sale, but neighbors are invited to come help volunteer their time to get it in better shape as new prospective owners come check it out. Childcare will be available for those who need it to be able to help, and a pizza lunch will be provided.

Then, on Sunday, November 17, swing over to Studio LuLoo in Oaklyn for psych-folk pop artists Cuddle Magic, Philadelphia cult hero, Alex G, and lo-fi pop act yearlongday. The show starts at 7 p.m.
