The Library Never Looked So Good

For Director Brett Bonfield, March 2012 will be his month to shine.

Bonfield was chosen to illustrate the month of March in a new, 2012 calendar titled Men of the Stacks. The calendar features a 12-person cast of all-male librarians from around the country.

All proceeds from calendar sales will benefit the It Gets Better Project, an incentive aimed at young adolescents battling harassment and bullying because of their sexuality.

The project sends its message—that things will get better, if youngsters can just push through the difficult teenage years—to youth in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LBGT) community.

The movement—which began with a single YouTube video offering support to struggling teens—is now recognized worldwide, with more than 25,000 submissions to the It Will Get Better Project, including clips made by President Barack Obama, Stephen Colbert and more.

According to Men of the Stacks' website, the calendar idea was conceived some years ago, drawing inspiration from another librarian calendar that was published.

But this time, the angle was different.

One thing was lacking in the first calendar: the presence of male librarians.

And so Men of the Stacks was born.

"It's really well done," said Bonfield of the calendar. "Kudos to calendar organizers Megan Perez and Trevor Dawes (both librarians also featured in the calendar). Calendar purchasers will help stop bullying, help promote libraries, and will get a fabulous calendar."

In Bonfield's March spread, he gives another nod to Collingswood, being photographed among stacks of books in his wife's yoga studio, .
