Kids Will Reign at Junior Women's Club's First Walk-A-Thon

Collingswood Junior Women's Club will host its first Walk-A-Thon, and proceeds will be used to create a pollination garden in the Knight Park.

For the first time, Collingswood Junior Women's Club will host its Walk-A-Thon, in hopes of making it an annual event.

The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, May 22, in the —located at Park and Collings avenues.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the walk starts at 9 a.m.

Open to children of all ages, proceeds from the walk will be used to create a pollination garden in the park.

"The idea for this event came from new (Junior Women's Club) Vice President Michelle Miller," said Collingswood Junior Women's Club President Alyce Taylor. "It was a great idea, because all of the walks for children (in the area) are generally too long."

This walk will course an approximately 1-mile-long stretch.

"We'll begin at the children's gazebo (in the Knight Park), circle around the park, and come back (to our starting point)," said Taylor. "This (length) is doable for the children, and teaches them a good lesson—they can be involved and work with the community."

And eventually, children will be able to see the fruits of their labors.

"The pollinator garden itself is necessary for the environment, as many pollinator species are at-risk for extinction," said Taylor. "Our club is very concerned with the environment and the Knight Park itself, so (we'll do) anything we can do to help.

"We expect to show children that there are things they can do to be involved, even at such a young age," she said. "The garden will hopefully flourish, and children will know that they were a part of making it so."

Taylor said there will be a box on-site at the Walk-A-Thon, which children can use to submit suggestions  for naming the garden.

The pollination garden, according to Taylor, will be located in one of two spots–either next to the bridge on the Knight Park island, or in the children's garden.

Pretzels and water will be for sale on-site, while children trek the Walk-A-Thon course.

Registration to walk in the event is $5 per child.

Those who bring and donate a new hat at the event can register for just $3. All collected hats will be donated to children with cancer.
