The heavyweights made sure the Collingswood High School wrestling team’s appearance in the playoffs will be more than just a cameo.
Collingswood defeated Buena, 45-22, in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 Tournament Monday night. The Panthers were fueled by their bigger wrestlers, getting wins from all six weight classes from 160 through 285.
Bill Crowley (182), Pat Miles (195) and John Deaner (220) each provided maximum points by pinning their opponent, while Forley Gunby (160), Mike Campbell (170) and Paul Lunney (heavyweight) earned wins by decision.
Collingswood also picked up 18 points from Shawn Clark, Alex Irwin and Dan Havens. Clark (138) and Irwin (145) each had pins, while Havens was awarded a forfeit.
With the victory, Collingswood sets up a rematch with South Jersey powerhouse and No. 1 seed Paulsboro. The Red Raiders won the regular-season meeting, 46-21, on Feb. 4.
In the other Group 1 quarterfinal, No. 3 Haddon Township was upset by No. 6 Woodstown, 41-22. Woodstown will travel to face No. 2 Cinnaminson in the semifinals.
