FREE TONIGHT: A Very Potter Musical

The student-produced musical parody—a first for the Collingswood Community Theatre—kicks off a two-day run at the high school tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Daniel Radcliffe’s starring role in Broadway’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying last year is probably the closest any of us ever thought we’d come to seeing Harry Potter belt out a showtune.

We were wrong.

A group of Collingswood High School teens will present A Very Potter Musical, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20, at 7:30 PM at the Collingswood Middle School auditorium. Admission is free, with donations accepted to benefit Collingswood Community Theatre.

Student-directed and produced from start to finish, A Very Potter Musical is a parody that pokes loving fun at several of the popular novels and their film counterparts.

It also features music and lyrics by Darren Criss, now of Glee fame. (The original production at University of Michigan propelled Criss to internet stardom and discovery by Glee producers when a bootleg ended up on YouTube.)

“Everyone involved is so talented,” said CHS freshman Michelle Nigro, cast member and publicist for the production. “We’ve had a lot of fun in rehearsals, and we’re really looking forward to the performances.”

While the production is a parody, it’s also presented with a strong affection for the source material. “Everyone loves Harry Potter,” said Nigro. “The songs are great, and tell the story in a really charming way.”

Nigro hopes that this is the start of more student-produced productions from the Collingswood Community Theatre. “We hope this is successful and we can do more shows like it in the future.”
