Camden County College to Mark Titanic Sinking's 100th Anniversary

Camden County College submitted the following press released regarding a series of programs it will host at its Blackwood campus to mark the April 15 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking:

April 15 will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic on its maiden voyage and the deaths of more than 1,500 of its passengers and crew members. Camden County College’s Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility will recognize this milestone with a free, three-part series on the luxury liner’s brief history and legendary demise.

A Tribute to the Titanic: 100-Year Anniversary of the Tragedy will be presented April 10, April 17 and May 1. The series will include music heard on board, a discussion of the technological aspects of the “unsinkable” ship and an examination of the 1997 James Cameron movie Titanic.

“Camden County College’s tribute is appropriate and timely in light of the anniversary of the tragedy, the re-release of the film in 3D and the continuing popularity and intrigue of the Titanic story and its diverse group of passengers,” said CCC Professor Eileen Radetich, who organized the series. “There are timeless issues to be discussed in what I anticipate to be a somewhat bittersweet yet brilliant program.”

Each event in the series will begin at 7 p.m. in Civic Hall, which is inside the Connector Building on CCC’s Blackwood Campus. The campus is located at College Drive and Peter Cheeseman Road in Gloucester Township.

Scheduled are:

• April 10: “The Last Songs they Heard” with Camden County College music instructor Robert Smith and a quintet of fellow musicians.
• April 17: “The Titanic and the Risks of Safety” with Edward Tender of Rutgers University–New Brunswick.
• May 1: “James Cameron’s Titanic: An Accurate Retelling or Hollywood Fantasy?” with film, video and production expert Michael Apalucci.

The series is free and open to the public, and is recommended for area educators. New Jersey professional development credit is available for teachers who attend.
