Our weekly Q&A with county freeholders.

Got a problem and need an answer from Camden County government? We’ve got your solution.

Ask Your Freeholder is a weekly feature from Haddonfield Patch in which you get to ask questions and get them answered here every Friday by the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Camden County—the county's highest body of elected officials.

Just send your questions to bill.duhart@patch.com or ask it in our comment box below the story and we’ll take the first three every week and get one of the seven freeholders to personally answer your question for this column.

  • Patch Question 1. How, specifically, will the recent layoffs of roughly 260 county employees affect services provided to Camden County residents?

Answer from Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr.

The county, through some restructuring and reorganization and some outsourcing of services to vendors, will be able to supply all of the same services to county residents that we have always provided. It is our mission and obligation to provide these services and we have made sure that we will be able to do it.

  • Patch Question 2: What is the county plan to fill potholes on county highways? Is there adequate budget and staffing to get the job done, especially after the harsh winter? And what is the timetable for getting the job done?

Answer from Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Public Works Department:

The county plan to fill potholes is the one we have always employed. We make a list and a work schedule and we fix them. And we do have budget and staff to execute our plan. In addition, we do road repair and repaving. Used to fill a pothole can erode over time.

Potholes, which are temporary fixes that severe weather can dislodge, are an ongoing project. In addition, we have scheduled road projects, which can include resurfacing and other improvements.

The highway department deploys three hot asphalt patch boxes that respond to daily pothole complaints. Additionally, it has two cold patch trucks that go out as well.

As an example of how much we do, from January through the first week in April, we have used nearly 400 tons of asphalt in repairing county roads.

Our efforts in road improvement and repairs will continue throughout the summer months. Not all roads in the county are county roads to fix—some are municipal and others are state roads. For a list of county roads and a chart of ongoing road projects, go to our website, camdencounty.com.

If you have a particular pothole you want to report, you can call 856-566-2980 or email us at highway@camdencounty.com.
