Judge Upholds $1M Bail in Oaklyn Slaying, More Details Emerge

Shakeysha Pruitt barely knew Kafarr Logan-Horton before she killed him, authorities said Wednesday. 

Pruitt, who is charged with murder in Logan-Horton's death, appeared in state Superior Court in Camden on Wednesday for a bail hearing. 

Prosecutors argued that the 24-year-old West Berlin woman poses a flight risk because of the life sentence she faces. 

Superior Court Judge Lee Solomon agreed, and Pruitt, who stands accused of the first murder reported in the tiny borough in years, was remanded to the Camden County Jail in default of $1 million cash-or-bond bail.

Although Pruitt drove Logan-Horton, 33, to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden on Sunday afternoon after allegedly stabbing him, she left soon after, and was initially only known to police as a witness to his injury, authorities said.

Logan-Horton died at the hospital a few hours after he was received there, authorities said.

Camden County investigators tracked Pruitt down afterwards, however, and she confessed to the stabbing in the custody of Oaklyn police on Tuesday evening. 

According to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Pruitt and Logan-Horton met for the first time Sunday at his Oaklyn home. At some point, police say Pruitt became angry with him and retrieved a knife from the kitchen. 

Pruitt then allegedly returned to the bedroom, where Logan-Horton was, and stabbed him twice in the chest. 

What provoked the incident is as yet unclear. At the arraignment, families of both the victim and the accused appeared unfamiliar with one another or the details of the incident.

A woman identifying herself as Pruitt's sister also apologized to the family of the victim in court.

Pruitt has no previous criminal record.

Logan-Horton was a registered sex offender, according to public documents that say in 2000 he was convicted of underage sexual contact stemming from a 1996 incident in Mercer County. He was 16 at the time.

It was not immediately known whether Oaklyn police had any record of Logan-Horton's record. The Camden County Prosecutor's Office could not confirm immediately whether he would have been compelled to notify them of his sex-offender status upon moving to the borough.
