Drug Drop-Off at Police Dept. Saturday at 10 a.m.

Authorities say the event will allow Collingswood residents to dispose of old medication safely and without polluting waterways.

The Collingswood Police Department is hosting a prescription drug drop-off for borough residents from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at the station house (735 N. Atlantic Avenue).

The event is part of a statewide campaign called "Operation Take Back New Jersey" Fourteen municipalities in Camden County are participating, including nearby Oaklyn and Haddonfield.

Drop-off points in each town—the police stations—are intended for the use of the residents of those respective municipalities.

The initiative is meant to help curb the misuse of prescription drugs without contaminating waterways, which are not equipped to process their removal.

In fact, a 2008 study by the Associated Press noted that "a vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans."

Police will be collecting:

  • Prescription medication
  • Over-the-counter medication
  • Ointments
  • Sprays
  • Inhalers
  • Creams
  • Vials
  • Pet medication

The borough cautions residents to NOT bring:

  • Illegal drugs
  • Biohazardous material
  • Needles/sharps
  • Personal care products (shampoo, soaps, lotions, sunscreens, etc.)
  • Household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, oil, gas)
