Setting the Record Straight
Jim Maley, Joan Leonard and Mike Hall set the record straight - as they did at the Candidates' Forum - on false financial charges being made by one of the candidates.
We need to set the record straight! As the May 14 election draws near, one candidate is sharing some figures that are false in an effort to persuade voters. We’ve been running a campaign based solely on our record and our plans for the next four years but we feel it’s important for you to have the facts.
Collingswood’s debt is the same in 2012 as it was in 2005. Since 2005, we have paid down our debt by the same amount we have borrowed to improve our roads, water plant, and pool, build neighborhood parking lots and complete other capital projects. Our debt is the same in 2012 that it was in 2005. One candidate charges Borough debt has increased “ninefold”. It is flat out false and we’re happy to review Borough finances openly with anyone, anytime – as always.
In 2012, redevelopment PILOTS generated $1,952,756 in revenue. These payments have supported far more than the costs of redevelopment – these payments support our police, fire and general budget. And PILOTs take not one nickel from our schools – ask our Superintendent! (And read the Patch reporting on the subject from a couple months ago.) PILOTs are new revenues that give incentives leading to ratables to control taxes. That’s whyour ratables have increased this year!

The Zane School is being sold for $100,000 more than its 2012 appraised value. Don’t be fooled when charges are made based on a 2005 tax assessment – the property is being sold for $100,000 more than its current appraisal value. And it will generate tax revenue for the first time ever! Plus the parking lot will be metered generating additional revenues, and the front steps are open for events.
70% of municipal debt is locked in fixed interest rates. Municipal debt has been locked in fixed rates for years and there is no risk that rising interest rates could hurt municipal finances.
