Five Things for This Week: 10/1/12 to 10/6/12

1. Collingswood Borough Commissioners Monthly Meeting
Monday, Oct. 1; 7 p.m. at Collingswood Community Center

The big item on the docket Monday evening will likely be the outcome of the declaratory judgment in the LumberYard petitioners case, which is expected at the Camden County Courthouse on Monday afternoon.

2. Sages of Ages
Wednesday, Oct. 3; 1 to 4 p.m. at the Collingswood Community Center

Dedicated to readers 50 and older, 'Sages of Ages' is an interactive event that will provide readers "a unique and different way" to get in the Book Festival spirit.

Speakers include Book Festival founder Jean Brennan, who will provide an overview of the event on its 10th anniversary, and Sandra White-Grear and Bill Brahms, who will discuss their book, Haddon Township. After, Peter Murphy from the Murphy Writing Seminars will conduct a writers' workshop for those who want to give it a shot.

Plus: everyone in attendance leaves with a free bag of books!

3. Roots & Shoots Club
Wednesday, Oct. 3; 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Knight Park

The Roots & Shoots Nature Club invites second-through-eighth-grade students to learn about all that the great outdoors has to offer. Its after-school nature study series will run Wednesday nights throughout October, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Knight Park.

"Younger children may attend with a parent/guardian, and high school students may join as "Eco-Mentors" to assist group leaders," according to group leaders.

4. First Thursday Jazz Season Kick-Off
Thursday, Oct. 4; 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Collingswood Community Center

The ninth season of the First Thursday Collingswood Jazz Series kicks off Oct. 4 with baritone saxophonist and flautist Denis DiBlasio. DiBlasio is the Rowan University jazz director and executive director of its Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz. (Hear some of his work here.)

5. Collingswood Book Festival
Saturday, Oct. 6; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The tenth anniversary of the local bibliophiles' dream event kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, with book signings, author readings, a digital bookmobile and special events for children. Come meet local authors, celebrities, and your neighbors.

There are many other events surrounding the book festival, as well, including Monday's discussion of The Submission, the town-wide read, and the Art of the Book II Gallery. Check 'em out!
