Collingswood Hosts Almost Home Animal Shelter Benefit Wednesday

Collingswood resident Nancy Welsh's rescue facility needs to raise about $3,000 to wire its kennel air conditioning system.

It's hot in the Almost Home Animal Shelter, especially in the summer.

The hum of giant fans is just part of the general background noise, which includes excited dogs, hungry cats and a constantly ringing telephone.

It's okay in the front office, but the bulk of the building, situated in a Pennsauken industrial park, gets bad. In the heat of summer, volunteers who clean its kennels by hand have been known to come over to give the dogs cooling-off time in kiddie pools.

A solution is in sight—with a little help, hopes Executive Director Nancy Welsh.

Welsh scored a big donation from a generous soul who paid $10,000 to cover the cost of the system and its installation. The only hang-up is fundraising the last bit, about $3,000, to pay for its wiring.

So Almost Home Animal Shelter is having a fundraiser Wednesday at the Collingswood Community Center. Admission is free, but a $10 donation is suggested. Music will be provided by the Tommie Griggz Band with special guest Matt Portella.

There will also be a basket auction, items for sale and refreshments provided. Children are welcome. Doors open at 7 and the show starts at 7:30.
