Fiddler on the Roof

Relive the tradition!  The Collingswood Community Theatre invites you to experience one of Broadway’s all-time greatest musicals, Fiddler on the Roof, this February.  Fiddler has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its humor, warmth, and honesty. The universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. Fiddler held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years until Grease surpassed its run. It remains Broadway's fifteenth longest-running show in history.

The story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman and father of five daughters in turn-of-the-century Russia, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. When Tevye's three older daughters want to make their own matches, he must cope both with their strong-willed actions, as each one's choice of husband moves further away from the customs of his faith.  Tevye’s family must also cope with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.  Yet it is Tevye's love of his family, pride and faith that help him face the dangerous forces which threaten to destroy the very life he and his fellow villagers are trying to preserve.

Fiddler is filled with a rousing, heartwarming score, including Tradition, Matchmaker, Matchmaker, If I Were A Rich Man and Sunrise, Sunset. No other musical has so magically woven music, dance, poignancy and laughter into such an electrifying and unforgettable experience. To Life!  L’Chiam!
