Daylight Saving Time: Five Things to Know

You lose an hour of sleep, but it's not all bad news in Collingswood. There's even a free doughnut in it for you!

The worst part about losing an hour of sleep is...well, take your pick. But it doesn't have to be all bad. Here's five things that might take the edge off the change.

1. When you roll the clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday (Saturday night for you party animals), Collingswood Fire Chief Keith Davis reminds you to take a look at your smoke detectors and change those batteries too.

"We recommend you have a smoke alarm on every level and in every bedroom of your home," Davis wrote to Patch in an e-mail.

"It is also a good time to practice a fire escape drill with the entire family," Davis wrote. "If anyone needs a detector or assistance changing batteries, they can contact the fire department."

2. For those who want a sweet escape from their sleep-deprived stupor, Krispy Kreme is offering a free glazed doughnut to folks who mosey on over this Sunday. The sugar will help release powerful endorphins in your brain that make you feel a little better about the earlier hour.

3. Want to feel like a proper grammarian? You can correct your bleary-eyed friends and children by reminding them that the event is called "Daylight Saving" time—leave off that last "s" for savings!

4. The 2 a.m. time change theoretically—theoretically—causes the least amount of disruption to your sleep schedule. Falling back an hour can also tack on an extra 60 minutes to last call at your local watering hole. No such luck in spring, but Collingswood is BYOB-city anyway.

5. Just think: you’ll get your hour of sleep back on Nov. 3, as the "fall back" hour comes around on the first Sunday in November.
