Viewfinder: Collingswood Cleans Up From Irene

Collingwood wasn't exactly a ghost town Sunday, but there were noticeably less people out and about as the borough began cleaning up from Hurricane Irene.

Along the Haddon Avenue corridor, just a few businesses, mostly eateries, had opened their doors and on-street parking was unusually plentiful. 

Around town, tell-tale signs of Irene's visit were evident. Most residential streets had branch and leaf debris scattered in the roadway. The more unlucky residents had huge sections of trees come down in their yard.

flooded, submerging benches and trashcans under murky water, and Knight Park had downed tree limbs almost everywhere visitors turned.

But it was the scene at Cooper River that drew the most gawkers. Entire sections of South Park Drive disappeared under flood waters. At the intersection of East Browning Road and South Park, several feet of water buried a fire hydrant—only its yellow tip remained above water. The next section of the road was bone dry, only to go underwater a block later, this time covering almost an entire bench. 

The also experienced major flooding. While the river usually stays to the club's back end, Sunday the building and grounds were completely surrounded by the surging water.
