Hurricane Sandy Cancellations, Closings and Re-Openings

There are plenty of storm-related cancellations and closings around Collingswood from Hurricane Sandy. Here's an ongoing list.

UPDATE: 5:12 p.m. Oct. 30 - The following information was released by the borough of Collingswood.

Volunteers are needed to help with canvassing efforts. Email Mayor Maley at jmaley@collingswood.com if you are willing to help canvass by reaching out to neighbors that have lost power tonight and tomorrow. Borough officials are also collecting information on who may have generators available for neighbors to borrow. If you have a generator that you are willing to lend out, please also email jmaley@collingswood.com

The Collingswood Library and Community Center are open this evening. These are wi-fi hotspots with electricity. They are open to the public for those that need to warm up and recharge. Library will be open until 8pm and Community Center open until 10pm.

Regular leaf and yard waste collection has been suspended and will continue when possible. Report downed branches and wire to the OEM at 856-854-7447 x0. Remember to rake leaves and debris on to your curbstrip – NOT in the street. Trash is now on a regular schedule.

Remember to check in on elderly neighbors and friends that may not have cell phones or have special needs like medications.

Please be mindful of caution tape and cones that indicate downed wires and other danger. Downed wires are live and are very dangerous. Stay away.

Schools

- Collingswood, Oaklyn and Woodlynne schools are closed Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 29-30. They will re-open Wednesday.

- Christian Day Nursey School is closed Monday and Tuesday

Government offices and services

-  Collingswood trash and leaf collection is canceled for Monday and Tuesday and will be picked up on the normal schedule next week.

- Camden County is still in a state of local emergency, and all non-essential offices will be closed. Traffic and personnel on county roads is restricted to essential services and travel deemed necessary.

- The Camden County flu clinic scheduled for Monday, Oct. 29 at the Katz Jewish Community center in Cherry Hill has been rescheduled. The new date is Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon, same location: 1301 Springdale Rd., Cherry Hill.

- All Camden County parks and libraries in the county system are closed Monday and Tuesday.

- New Jersey state offices are closed Monday and Tuesday. All non-essential employees should stay home. Essential employees must report to work on time.

- All state parks and historic sites will shut down at noon on Sunday. Current campers must leave by midday Sunday. Parks may be shut down the entire week, state officials say. PATCO

- PATCO rail service will be suspended early Monday morning. The last train to Lindenwold will leave the 15th/16th and Locust Station in Philadelphia at 2:50 a.m. The last train to Philadelphia will leave Lindenwold at 2:15 a.m.

- The Ferry Avenue station parking lot, notorious for its tendency to flood, is closing down at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Travel - updated 1:20 p.m. Tues., Oct. 30 by NJDOT

 - The New Jersey Turnpike Authority announced that it has reopened the entire length of the Garden State Parkway to traffic in both directions. Motorists can utilize the roadway immediately and should expect the resumption of tolls at 2 p.m.

- The Parkway had been closed due to flooding yesterday from its southern terminus in Cape May County to Exit 129 near the Driscoll Bridge.

- There are approximately 190 locations on state highways where travel lanes are closed due to storm damage.

- Sections of the New Jersey Turnpike remain closed, including the southbound lanes between Exits 10 and 14 where NJTA crews are working to remove debris that floated onto the roadway. The northbound lanes in this area have been reopened.

- The Turnpike remains closed between Exits 14 and 14C.  Additionally, the southbound ramp at Exit 15W to I-280 is closed due to a washout.

- Travel restrictions remain in place at all eastbound bridges to the barrier islands.

- Approximately 1,300 Turnpike and NJDOT employees are working to restore all travel lanes and are coordinating efforts with utility companies.

- All unnecessary travel should be avoided, but drivers who must travel should check www.511.com for up-to-the-minute information on travel conditions and road closures.

Colleges and universities

- Camden County College is closed Monday. 

- Rowan University is closed Monday and Tuesday. Students may remain on campus, but have to inform their resident advisers. 

- Rutgers-Camden is closed Monday.

Election-related activities

- With the closure of Rutgers-Camden comes the cancellation of a scheduled debate between Rep. Rob Andrews (D) and challenger Greg Horton (R). Andrews, an 11-term incumbent and Horton, a school administrator, are running for the 1st Congressional District seat.

- The Collingswood Zone PTA Meet the Candidates forum, originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, will be canceled. Please stay with Patch for candidate profiles upcoming in advance of next Tuesday's election.
