Second Saturday Brings Unique Local Color

A variety of artists dotted the landscape of Collingswood's Second Saturday to the delight of locals and neighborhood guests alike.

It was an 80-degree June night, but the temperature didn't keep shoppers and patrons of the arts from browsing the displays in downtown Collingswood for .

At the corner of Haddon Avenue and Powell Lane, entrepreneur Shelley Henshaw debuted her "Chalk Me Up" apparel line—children's t-shirts that function as chalkboards as well.

“I’m the only one I know around that is doing it now,” said Henshaw, who developed the idea with her 17-year-old son, and now says she is in talks with various retailers to market it.

Down the street, Nancy Allen promoted her "Queen of Hearts" handcrafted jewelry. Inspired by circumstances in which she "couldn’t find what I was looking for at the mall," then went home and made it herself, Allen felt right at home among other Second Saturday artisans.

Nearby, jeweler Tara Helwig was displaying one-of-a-kind earrings, necklaces, pendants and bracelets. Helwig, who previously worked at Vintage Rose, a former Haddon Avenue jewelry store, credits her time there as the inspiration for her line.

Printmaker Lenor Mirochna was displaying hand-drawn and computer created prints from her studio, Paprika Letterpress & Design.

“It’s a very labor-intensive job,” said Mirochna, who was presenting at her second Second Saturday.

A good mix of musical performances also fueled the open-air scene, including the band No Commitment, which entertained with hits like "Gimme Shelter," along with multiple Green Day anthems, including "Holliday" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."
