Collingswood Field Hockey Grounds Closed This Season

Rain, insects, and drainage issues have damaged the Knight Park playing surface.

Just a year after all the excitement of its centenary season, the Collingswood High School field hockey team will be giving up its home field advantage for 2013.

The Bea Markwick Hockey Field, which plays host to the home games for the Panther squad, has been clobbered by the elements this offseason, said Al Hird, buildings and grounds supervisor for the Collingswood Public School District in a letter.

"Insect infestation, erosion, and drainage problems have plagued the field" during "an extraordinary rainy spring and summer," Hird wrote.

Although fall is field hockey season, it's also the best time for caretakers "to renovate and reconstruct a turf grass area," he noted.

That means the grounds will be closed for all recreational purposes throughout the fall growing season.

An alternative location for the contests was not named in Hird's note.
