Borough Beeswax: Buzzing About Fall

As the leaves and the weather turn, what's Collingswood thinking about?

To everything there is a season, and as the borough heads into autumn, Borough Beeswax asked Collingswooders and town visitors about their expectations of the fall.

Neal Fisher of Deptford is looking forward to football season. As a Vikings fan, he estimates his team’s chances as finishing “less than .500 because of our great quarterback,” former Eagle Donovan McNabb.

“We’ve got a good receiving corps,” Fisher says. “I’m more concerned about the O-line.”

Fisher, who also self-identifies as a casual Eagles fan, says his favorite way to enjoy the game is “in my family room, by myself, with a glass of cabernet” (while his significant other is cooking or shopping).

Pat Stewart of Westmont says he’s looking forward to the cool weather.

Stewart, an avid runner, says “it’s much more pleasant” to run at Cooper River in the fall than the summer. His sister lives in Maine, and so he and his wife, Susan, plan to take a trip north this season to see the fall colors in the foliage there.

“It’s far, but beautiful,” Stewart says.

Keara Giannotti of Harding Terrace is looking forward to the “fungi forays” that the fall season brings. Giannotti, who runs an environmental education camp in Marlton, participates in the New Jersey Mycological Association mushroom hunts. Since it’s been such a wet August, she expects to see a variety of species on display.

“They’re this beautiful part of nature that gets overlooked,” Giannotti says.

Jen Pantaleo of Lees Avenue can’t wait for honeycrisp apples, but for Chris Lynch, the most anticipated part of the season is pumpkin flavoring.

“It’s in everything,” Lynch says, although as a traditionalist, his favorite is pumpkin pie.

Pete DeMeo of New Brunswick, Patrick Sheppard of Trenton, Steve Olivera of Pennsauken, and Lou Cattona of Cherry Hill were gathered together at the Collingswood Farmer’s Market to attend a beer festival in Philadelphia. The group of four was most excited for the start of the fall sports season.

To a man, when asked what they enjoy most about the fall, the group replied “football” in unison.

A moment later, DeMeo said, “Hockey!”
