Eagles' Comeback Bid Grounded Intentionally

The Eagles had more first downs than the Redskins, outgained them by 100 yards and ran 20 more offensive plays than did the Redskins on their way to yet another demoralizing loss.

The reasons the Eagles managed to lose their 10th game in 11 outings are twofold: they again lost the turnover battle, and they again were badly outplayed in the red zone. Final score: 27-20.

Nick Foles played relatively well, but committed two costly turnovers. The Eagles defense intercepted a pass for the first time in 270 pass attempts by opponents—spanning an unbelievable 9 games—but it was too little, too late.

More damaging was the disparity in Red Zone effectiveness between the two teams. The Eagles converted just 1 of 3 opportunities, while the Redskins were 3-3 within 20 yards. That more than erased the Eagles advantage in yards and first downs.

The Eagles defense is soft and toothless; that is beyond dispute. No matter any statistics to the contrary, and there aren’t many, this defense is an embarrassment to the Green and Silver.

There are gaping holes all over the field in which opponents can roam without fear because the Eagles have no hard-hitters in the defensive backfield. The shoddy tackling, poor coverage and average pass rush are not what the Eagles have long been known for. It is a disgrace for any longtime Eagles fan to watch.

The offensive line is horrendous. It allowed 5 sacks on Foles, and Eagles running backs frequently met defenders in their own backfield a split-second after taking a handoff. Provided some injured offensive linemen return next year, the line should be a lot better, but that seems a long way off right now.

Lesean McCoy played well in his return, making Foles’ job a little easier. The rest of Foles’ supporting cast is comprised of too many backups. He finished 32-48 for 345 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Those impressive numbers should be graded on a curve because his protection was poor all game long.

Brandon Graham did not record a sack, but again played well, leading the team with 7 tackles. There were few other positives to point to regarding the Eagles D.

The only significance of this dressed-up preseason game was that it was probably the last home game for Andy Reid. It ended fittingly.

Foles engineered the 2-minute drill admirably again, driving the Eagles down to the Redskins 5-yard-line with less than 20 seconds left on the clock. Foles made a costly bad decision and tried to elude a tackler instead of getting rid of the ball early. He did finally get rid of it under duress, and with 1 second left on the clock, he had one more chance to recreate the last second TD he threw against Tampa Bay.

What seemed like 5 minutes later, the officials stepped in and called a very questionable intentional grounding penalty. That carries with it a 10-second runoff and the game was declared over. Eagles fans were deprived of even an opportunity to play spoiler. Officials are there to officiate, not decide the game. Referee Ed Hochuli often forgets that and did so again Sunday.

Andy Reid’s impressive accomplishments of his first 12 seasons should not be minimized. However, this team is back to being the basement-dweller it was when he became HC in 1999. Clearly, it is time to go in a new direction. Over the next two-to-three weeks, fans will be watching with Eagles-eyes to see if Jeff Lurie agrees.

I was hoping the team would give Andy a victory send off yesterday. Alas, it did not happen. I hope he takes some time off to reset himself. I'm sure he will have another opportunity to coach again. Sems like we are in for a rough couple of years rebuilding.

I will always have great respect for Andy as a coach and a man- flawed like anyone else- but a lot of character. Change of scenery will be good for all involved. In today's NFL, a team can turnaround quickly. The Eagles have some pieces, but the mix is bad. I want a guy with NFL experience to remedy that. I don't want Chip Kelly at all and I'm hearing he's first on their list. Very worrisome.

Very true Mike, part of me will always have a great deal of respect for all the great things Andy accomplished here as a coach. The respect he has through-out the NFL is obvious. He has always been a great leader, etc, but does have some glaring weaknesses. No one who watched this team before Andy arrived should forget how many playoff failures we had. To knock him as much as we've heard many do, just seems very short-sighted, and lacks awareness of all the other NFL teams who have similar issues with coaches and finding the right one. I so wish Andy, the team and we the fans could've achieved the ultimate goal, after such a long & trying journey, it would've felt so satisfying. Andy will one day be remembered fondly by all Eagles fans, at least I hope so. This is one of my favorite Andy moments, with my not so favorite Eagles beat writer.

That's great. They didn't win the ultimate prize and that's what matters most and the last 2 years have been dismal failures. However, we went from a 3rd rate program to a first class program under Andy's reign. Throughout the 90's big time free agents frequently wouldn't consider Philly. Over the last 15, the Eagles have gotten most of the guys they've wanted because perception changed. Unfortunately, 2 offseasons ago they got EVERY guy they wanted and got worse. That's when a change at the top has to be made. But NOT to Chip Kelly.

I thnk that Chip Kelly thing is just media noise, to engage the fans in continued consumption, thus furthering a conversation at a moment many wanna just enjoy football and kinda tune the Eagles out. The Daily News loved it when they won, were good even if there was much turmoil, but now in this state, what do they have to write about and sell papers with other than this topic. I feel it doesn't make sense considering the QB we have here and the system we expect Kelly to bring if he was hired. Those great free agents you mentioned, yeah it didn't work out, but I also think that's often too much media hype. How often do you see team, i.e. the Cowboys, do exactly that, spend a ton of money on desirable free agents, and what do the Cowboys have to show for it in the last decade+. The GM position should have been taken from Andy long ago, the draft is how you build a successful team and that's one of his most glaring weaknesses.

Bobo, Andy hasn't had the GM in many years. Looking at the 2012 draft- albeit incomplete because so recent- I give credence to the reports in the offseason that had Andy demanding full control. I think Banner was always meddling and that contributed to the poor draft results. If, in fact, 2012 was the first time in a long time that Andy SOLELY was making the picks, then it seems he did a good job. It's not a coincidence this draft appears to be better and it was the first one following Banner's ouster. If the Eagles do hire Chip Kelly, are they tacitly saying they don't believe in Foles?

GM or something president of football operations, Andy did have the final say on the majority of football personal decisions. He had the same say on who to put in that GM position and who to hire as director of player personnel.Who to draft, he had a scouting department who he trusted to collect information to then make the decision on who to draft and sign. I imagine those people under him had the ability to sign and draft too, but he was told before they did it. They did a poor job, with some bright spots for sure, but when Andy says its 'on me,' in a press conference after the game, this is what he was also referring too.

I can't see the Eagles hiring Chip Kelly? But then again maybe because of the Harbaugh and Pete Carroll success it's more of a possibility? Also I like Foles, I see him more like a Phil Simms. A quiet, not flashy, good game manager.. WINNER!!

I definitely can, although not happy about it. The Eagles brass tries to be innovative and ahead of the curve to varying degrees of success. Chip Kelly being the "hot" name would appeal to them. I think his offense is gimmicky and not a good fit for the Eagles personnel. I don't like Simms as an analyst, and hated him as Giant, but you could do worse than Phil Simms in the realm of being a "winner."

Andy Reid needs to be remembered as a very good coach but sadly could not get the job done in winning the Super Bowl in 04

Agreed. Imagine if McNabb had only committed 3 turnover in that Superbowl instead of 4- too much to ask for I guess.

Not taking the bait, but imagine if Jaws didn't throw the first pass of his Super Bowl directly to Rod Martin, who then had two more INTs and a SB record thanks to Jaws. McNabb faced a far superior defense, but both came up small.

Really torn on Foles. I definitely like his poise and calm demeanor. He has shown he can run a 2 minute drill very well- TB and last game he didn't finish it but he did drive them 80 yards in 4 minutes. I don't like that he missed an open Maclin and that the deep balls he throws sometimes look like ducks. I've seen him hum a lot of passes so not that concerned with it, but it has happened. Interesting to note he has a higher QB rating than Andrew Luck. The arc has generally gone up which is good. I think he's earned the right to be the starter next year and we'll just have to judge it from there because it's not conclusive after 5 starts- and really couldn't be.

Since I was 7, I don't really care that much about Jaws' imperfections. They got buried in 1981 against the Raiders, they lost by 3 in 2005. If McNabb had sucked a little less in that game- and not wasted time throwing up- they could have won. Wait, we agreed no to talk about "him" anymore. Has-been/Never-was anyway.

Imperfections, like what happens when the 1st play after the kickoff is an INT and the next play is a 17yd TD to Deion Branch's Uncle Cliff. That's Eagles team was done after the 3rd play of the game, and why that game was so painful and my memory so vivid, considering how excited I was as a 7yr old watching my most favorite team in this big important game. We never had a chance, and I watched the whole game. On the other hand, nah...Ok, i'm done.

I'm surprised that game is so vividly etched in your memory considering how young you were. Obviously, we all were much more educated football fans in 2004 so I found that much more painful. That is was so close made it more painful for me, not less.

True but your a kid and there was something so pure about it all. How can you forget when you first fell in love with the Eagles, which for me was that season, and then how quickly they took my heart out and stomped on it by how they lost, without the least bit of fight. Heck the Phils won a championship just months before, so I was ignorant enough then to expect us to always win a championship. You must remember all the hubbub and elation surrounding that moment in time.

Ya Know you brought up a good point, on my memories of such. One important point of reference which Matt Falciani will remember is Mrs Ceruto our T-1 teacher, who happened to be friends with Keith Kripple, well she brought him in to visit our class one day and we thought that was super cool! I gotta admit now, that Mr David walking into, maybe our 2nd or 3rd grade class, with Johnny Unitas to visit and sign pictures with Jevic Trucking on the bottom, which I still have. That moment is something I had no idea how cool it was then, but surely now I very much treasure.

Johnny U?! Now that's BIG time. Like the rest of the fan base, I am looking forward to the next chapter in the Eagles Almanac. Andy Reid's arrogance and rigidity have finally caught up to him and it is time for him to go. I have never seen an owner more indebted to a coach who has failed to win the ultimate prize. Just for the record, I feel like Andy's demise coincided with two singular events: 1) the passing of JJ 2) the hiring of Marty Mohrninwehg as OC. Those two have been validating each other's ill-conceived game plans based on an arena league philosophy for the past few years now. Andy's nest of doom has grown tighter and more incestuous over the past three years and I look forward to their exit. However, I must admit I am suffering from a rare case of Kellymyalgia. Bleh

Definitely, the loss of great assistants, many of whom are now or have been HC's in the NFL- Frazier, Shurmur, Harbaugh, Childress, etc- has hurt the Eagles a great deal. I love JJ as much as the next guy, but let's be honest, he was there for all of the Eagles failures in Championship Games, just like Andy was. No one likes to acknowledge that, but it's a fact. I also am so afflicted regarding Kelly.

What is most frustrating going forward is having this roadblock of howie roseman in the way. The most important relationship on an NFL team is that one between the head coach and the GM and if any top flight perspective coach doesn't feel that with howie, or believe in him, they'll say thanks but no thanks and we'll have to eventually accept a coach who is a few notches below our expectations. This sucks!

That is complete heresy on your part Mr. Diviney and also absolutely true. However, the defense was always the strength of the team during Andy's tenure. Also, I feel that the blame for the the two worst championship losses (TB, Carolina) falls at the feet of of Big Red and his premature abandonment of the running game. That's how I FEEL and feelings are not right or wrong they are just FEELINGS. Tootaloo Andy

When does this get boring? No the defense wasn't the strength, it was overrated by us cause we like the attacking style, and Mike is dead on Jim Johnson wasn't that great just like Buddy Ryan wasn't that great. No the blame should be shared on both sides, but we don't like words like finesse around these parts, which had its shortcomings and failures as our offensive scheme. Mike is dead on for pointing out something that often gets ignored. This is a train wreck, wherein I was trying to remember why you fall in love with your team, cause right now is hard seeing the light at the end of the ...
