The annual block party is just two weeks away.
Although New Jerseyans will take to the beaches and highways in droves to celebrate the long Memorial Day weekend, there are plenty who will stay behind and play it cool at home. For 33 years, May Fair has presented one of the most compelling reasons to leave the car keys on the counter, and this year will be no different. Touting a mile-long experience that includes crafts, snacks, live entertainment, and special deals at area businesses, May Fair is expected to draw around 50,000 people to town for the single-day celebration. (That's well in excess of the normal bump that arrives with the weekend farmers market, which is also going on that day.) The impact of the flooded downtown can be, well, awe-inspiring. "It can really take your …

Any details about possible changes remain sparse, but the show, filmed at Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, is coming back.
Everyone's favorite Red Bank-based comic book reality television show, Comic Book Men, is coming back for a second season, AMC recently announced. Walt Flanagan, manager of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, and one-fourth of the star power behind the reality show, confirmed Wednesday evening at the comic shop that the Kevin Smith-developed show is coming back, but that he's unaware of any finer details AMC has planned. The shop, where the reality TV show is filmed, is located in downtown Red Bank, Monmouth County. Comic Book Men's first season consisted of six one-hour episodes that revolved around the shop and the exploits of real friends and (sometime) employees of the Stash: Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic. …

Tickets are still available for the annual fundraiser at Perkins Center for the Arts, held Saturday, May 12.
Whether you enjoy the arts, craft beer or both, Perkins Center for the Arts has just what you’re looking for this weekend. The nonprofit community arts foundation will host its largest annual fundraiser this Saturday, May 12, with craft beers from local breweries, an all-you-can-eat gourmet menu and a silent auction with some luxe prizes up for grabs. Lee Bennett, Perkins Center projects and special events manager, said the group raised $15,000 at its 2011 beer-tasting, making the event its most lucrative fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the beer tasting will benefit Perkins’ many programs and support its operational expenses. “As a small organization, that’s very significant,” Bennett said, adding, "we’re hoping to do even better …

Collingswood is lucky to have Oklahoman Dave Kelly ringing in another spring season.
The swallows of San Juan Capistrano it ain't, but the trusty guitarwork of Audubon musician Dave Kelly is as sure a sign as any that the Collingswood Farmers Market is back in season. Kelly, a Tulsa transplant whose Okie charm has been warming the hearts of crowds at the open-air weekend festival for nine years, has a smile quicker than his fingers and a song list that goes back decades. Whether he's called upon to deliver Irish standards, Grateful Dead tunes or "Happy Birthday," Kelly provides the soundtrack that underscores the human carnival of weekends in Collingswood from May to November. He does it mostly for tips; sometimes vendors buy him breakfast. He does it partly for the chance to be outside, and entirely to meet the people in …

The BYOB event is $10 ($5 for students) and starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Collingswood Community Center.
The ninth season of the First Thursday Jazz series wraps at 7:30 tonight at the Coillingswood Community Center with guitarist Jef Lee Johnson, bassist Chico Huff and drummer Charlie Pateirno. Ten bucks get you in the door; if you're a student, that's enough for you AND a friend. The event is BYOB, and soft drinks will be provided. The performance is provided in partnership with Jazz Bridge, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency health, housing and legal issues for jazz musicians and their families. According to the site, its mantra is to "provide a resource center for community members and their families to access information on low-cost health and legal assistance, pro bono/sliding-scale professional services, and organizations…

The construction of a new multipurpose space will meet a variety of needs at the center in a sustainable and creative fashion.
When the Perkins Center for the Arts had to come up with a way to bankroll and construct a new parking lot for its Collingwood location, the nonprofit organization knew it would be doing some fundraising. Simply constructing a new, blacktop parking lot would have been a standard approach to resolving the problem, but doing that would potentially flood the area during periods of heavy rainfall. But through the lens of environmentalism, many seemingly commonplace problems may be resolved in a more lasting fashion with sustainable approaches. Instead, Perkins Center found an elegant solution to its problems with the help of some local donors. Rather than just building an empty lot, the facility developed a proposal to transform its site into …

The '80s pop sensation is on tour with her husband and co-writer Neil Giraldo.
Before she kicks off a big summer tour with fellow 1980s monoliths Journey and Loverboy in July, rocker Pat Benatar will ease through Collingswood en route to a longer New England weekend. The 59-year-old Brooklyn native is performing tonight at the Scottish Rite Auditorium with husband-collaborator Neil Giraldo, her guitarist and co-writer of hits like “Love Is a Battlefield,” “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Heartbreaker,” “Promises in the Dark” and “We Belong.” For 33 years, the couple’s fruitful collaboration has yielded platinum albums, Grammy and American Music Awards, and two daughters. Their latest album of original music, Go, was produced in August 2003; another release is planned for next summer. On their website, the singer and …

Jack and Christine Jeckot have built a successful collaboration on and off-stage that has produced more than a dozen plays, some grandchildren, and a 41-year marriage.
In the original story of Pinocchio, when The Talking Cricket admonishes the spiteful, titular puppet that “Trouble awaits boys who rebel against their parents,” he is smashed with a wooden mallet. That’s one detail upon which Collingswood resident Jack Jeckot did not seize in penning his musical adaptation of the story some 30 years ago, but it’s not the only one that distinguishes his take from the original or the 1940 version popularized by Walt Disney. Jeckot came up with the idea when reading the original story by Italian author Carlo Collodi to his eight-year-old son, John, who was in the hospital for a month after he was struck by a car. Jack Jeckot's mind started to travel to the far-flung places depicted in the story, and he …
