Community efforts left nothing but happy trees in The Knight Park this weekend.

At 8 a.m. Saturday morning, hundreds of volunteers gathered to assist Commissioners Joan Leonard and Mike Hall in a park cleanup.

Equipped with shovels, rakes, leaf blowers and other tools, the community spent the day raking leaves, removing graffiti, pulling weeds and laying mulch.

"Eighteen (dead) trees were already cut down yesterday by Collingswood Public Works Department," said Commissioner Leonard of prep work completed on Friday. "They'd been dead for years—two were struck by lightning, others affected by storms, and a bunch died from old age."

Leonard said residents who missed Saturday's cleanup may partake in another method to help beautify The Knight Park.

"For a $600 donation, you can purchase a bench—complete with a plaque dedicated to a loved one—as well as an ash tree that we'll put in the park," said Leonard. "And we're now also offering the option to purchase a tree only, for a $200 donation.

"It's a way to make you feel like you're connected to this park, especially if The Knight Park is meaningful to you in some way, as it is to so many," said Leonard.

Too bad they don't sell off, or hold an auction for all that firewood that was created. It is an avenue of revenue neither the borough nor the park trustees have considered. Taking into account that a cord of firewood is close to $200 .............

There are still way too many dead trees in that park. It's frustrating when I'm walking, biking, or driving around it. The Borough should really spend some time/money removing the eyesores. It could be much better asthetically.

So many angry people, so many wrong ideas.

First Collingswood doesn't own Knight Park. It was left in the will of Knight to the people of Camden County, it is controlled by a group of trustees.

It's only in the past 15 years or so that the boro of Collingswood has put any money toward it or supplied help in the way of public works. Mr Knight left in the neighborhood of $90,000 for the upkeep of the park, the money ran out after about 90 years.

Most of the money for the upkeep comes from private contribution and fund raisers.

As to Carl, he sat in his truck and watched people doing community service clean up the park, personally watched his act first hand for years. The trash cans were not emptied from November to April.

In closing feel free to contribute money, pick up litter walking through the park as many of us do already. Contact Mike Hall at Collingswood.com to sign up for the next park clean up. Bring your own tools, gloves and fuel for your leaf blowers.

The trees that were cut down were dead and full of rot and bugs, not good firewood. The wood is free for the taking, please take it and do what you like.

The free ride in over people the town is broke. You can sit around at your computer complaining about conditions or get out and help solve the problems, were not Democrats any more.

What a nice, sound post. And then you end it with a bizarre and whiny finish.

Sorry Porter, spill over from an other board I post on, much more aggressive than this one.

Re-reading the post I wish I had left it out.

Fair enough...I think we can all agree with much of what you wrote regardless of party affiliation. And thanks for your efforts with the park!

And where can I find out about the fund raisers? The last one I saw was about the playground, but that was 3 years ago.
