Stockton Students Sound Off on Debate

More than 60 students turned out for Monday night's final presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

With more than 60 people in one room watching a presidential debate on foreign policy, there was bound to be strong opinions and disagreement. Some people were even angry with themselves.

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Senate hosted a viewing party for the third and final presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney Monday night, Oct. 22. The subject was foreign policy, but the candidates debated a little bit of everything.

The 62 students and community members who gathered walked away with strong opinions, and in some cases, those opinions were different than when they walked into the Campus Center Event Room.

Evan Yeung, a sophomore and a Political Science major, felt Romney contradicted himself, and was not as polished as Obama was on the subject of foreign policy, but it’s the candidates’ economic policies that concerned him the most.

“Foreign policy is not my area of expertise, but I felt Romney lacked in most areas,” Yeung said. “ … Obama will not help the economy.”

Yeung, who describes himself as a conservative-leaning independent, felt Obama’s policies give no incentive for people to work hard.

Monday’s debate was the first one he’d heard about on campus.

“I’m leaning 90 percent one way, but I have to go back and watch the other two debates,” said Patricia Jean-Gilles, a senior majoring in biology. “I’ve been trying to keep up with what’s going on, but I missed the first two debates because I had things to do for classes.”

Monday’s debate was the first she was able to attend, but she said she’s been keeping up with events politically, and will be voting early because she will be volunteering at the polls come election day.

“The ballot is on my dresser,” she said.

Zach Roeioo is one student who has been swayed by the debates.

“I’m not a Democrat, and the fact that I’m thinking about voting for Obama (is making me mad),” said Roeioo, a sophomore business administration major.

Most of the applause and cheering throughout the debate came from a select few, and was reserved for Obama, particularly when Obama’s comments about the country no longer using horses and bayonets during wartime, and his comments concerning the auto industry.

Stockton Democratic Club Vice President felt Monday night’s debate was a good start for the Senate's Political Awareness Week effort.

“We tried hard to get people to come out and I think we were successful,” said Alexander, a senior majoring in business management. “We still have the whole week to go.”

Spooner - Of all the issues facing our country on foreign policy, I am glad that the President took the time to let us know the status of our military's bayonets and horses. Snarkey does not come across as terribly presidential. Despite my desire for more of a street fight, I think in hindsight we may discover that Romney was as crazy as a fox. On a number of occasions, he managed to direct the debate topic back to the economy which by every measure, he is leading the President. If you listen to the media's narrative today (across the board, e.g. CNN, Fox, MSNBC) and look again at the video clips of the debate, the consensus seems to be that Obama may have won the battle but is likely to lose the war. For those of us who feel that four more years of punishment is unacceptable, I'm OK with that.

Donna Griffin - you are correct.

Who give a fig about international affairs when the economy is what's on American voters minds? It's no secret that Obama cannot manage money - he's outspent every President from George Washington to George Bush - combined. Both times the CIC tried to introduce a budget, not one of his fellow Democrats voted in support. Not a single stinking vote from a single member of his party. Fact check it.

Then, there's Harry Reid. He's violated the oath of his office, as he's NEVER submitted a budget the entire time he's been in office. Fact check it.

As for Obama, he's running for a second term, yet - he doesn't have an agenda. Just the same marxist slogans beginning with 'Hope and Change' and now, 'Forward.'

No thanks.

Jersey - We'd better give a "fig" about foreign policy because another attack on our home soil would be game, set, match for our country. Romney was on target by proclaiming that unless we get our economic house in order we are extremely vulnerable to an attack. We're going to have to multi-task like crazy to dig out of the debt this one President has wrought on this nation.

From the Department of picayune fact checking:

The US Army currently has 419,155 bayonets in it's inventory. Not exactly a small number.

The US Marine Corps has 195,334 bayonets currently in inventory, and plans to aquire 175,061 more.

Maybe someone in the Obama administration should have done some fact checking before our CIC babbled on - without his teleprompter.

Romney only wanted to get outa there alive.... and he was obviously willing to sell-out every single prior idea, conviction or strategy he spouted earlier in the campaign to accomplish that. He didn't just flip flop.... be did a triple twist backflip.

Mattie - What did President Obama have to offer last night? Spastic railing about being misunderstood is not the presidential demeanor this nation is looking for. Romney was merciful in not mentioning Benghazi. Additionally, since the Democrat Party is still carrying on about everything (shy of my 14-year-old niece's acne) being Bush's fault, wouldn't it be refreshing if President Obama took responsibility for misstating the circumstances surrounding our ambassador's death? That would be honest....that would be appreciated.

donna, obama rightfully pointed out the stupidity of comparing our fleet to the 1917 fleet as if one ship today couldn't destroy the whole old fleet instantly. That making numbers today matter so much as if it would devastate or under mind our fighting capacity. If you don't concede that point then you have a point on the top of your hat. What does anybody say to Obama's fact that we out spend our nearest 10 allies or enemies combined and how that makes us the most power fleet and fighting force the world has ever know? At least to our ignorant knowledge.

Specifically, prove how Romney will be bad for us, along with the entire world. Moreover, prove how Republicans are 'bad for business, the middle class, environment, and the stability of the globe.'

Last time I checked, there are 22 countries burning, and citizens in each of those countries are shoulting, 'death to America.' Greece, Portugal, France, and maybe Italy are in current financial crisis, thanks to those countries investing their currencies in US Treasury Bonds. By the way, today they aren't worth the paper they're pinted on. We can thank Bill Clilnton for that, as he flooded the market with nothing but horrendous sub prime loans. That, along with the de-regulation of banking and oil.

"There is no documented wave or trend of individuals voting multiple times, voting as someone else, or voting despite knowing that they are ineligible. Indeed, evidence from the microscopically scrutinized 2004 gubernatorial election in Washington State actually reveals just the opposite: though voter fraud does happen, it happens approximately 0.0009% of the time. The similarly closely-analyzed 2004 election in Ohio revealed a voter fraud rate of 0.00004%.
National Weather Service data shows that Americans are struck and killed by lightning about as often."

You're wasting your time, George Clark.... there is no talking rationally or sensibly to these Romney suporters. It's all about $$ money $$ to them. (Well that, and getting The Black Man/Muslim/Socialist out of office).
They believe America should be ruled like a CEO rules a corporation, and they actually believe that some day, they too will be wealthy, happy and living in their McMansion next door to other Big Wigs -- all because America is a "business" and should be treated as such. "Humanity" doesn't count because there's no $ profits $ in humanity and compassion .... They believe the woes of America are the fault of poor people and lazy immigrants. Mr Clark,
The trickle down theory has been tried and succeeded. In 1914 Henry Ford more than doubled the minimum daily wage of his workers from $2.34 to $5.00 a day and at the same time lowered the price of his cars. It not only increased employee retention but also gave the workers more money to buy Model Ts and other products. This in turn increased sales and production of the other products.

Obama thinks we should emulate European countries in their social and economic policies.
Most of the people in the U S of A are here because they or their ancestors didn't like the social and economic policies of the countries they left.
There are still a lot more people coming here for those reasons than there are people leaving.

*They want Obama OUT, and they really don't care WHO gets in, as long as they are white, and republican.* Period.
They can't stand the thought that a Black man is our president, or they can't stand the idea that a (secret) Muslim is our president, or they believe the idea that Obama is a socialist out to destroy America. They have told me their reasons themselves. Racist and bigotry reasons. The socialist reason is just plain stupid... but whatever.

It all comes down to they want Obama Out. THAT is the most important "issue" for them in this election.

If we hire more government jobs that get paid for by the taxpayer and in NJ taxpayers are tapped out with high property, sales and income taxes, how do we pay for these government types and pensions? And if the Federal Government doesn't have a balanced budget but wants to spend more money, how is that even possible?
It makes sense to stop hurting small businesses with tax increases for Obamacare and let them instead try and stay afloat.

obama can't fight the high price we are paying for this winner take all game. only the people united can fight them. because we have been divided it's so much easier for them to conquer us. who are them? we the not yet enlightened are them. you are them too. what if we turned the games and opinionators off, say on a sunday go back to a town hall or maybe even a church and decide who makes or takes how much and what they actually do for us. shut the tvs off and we cud strike the oil companies with rolling boycotts or car pooling take back our high jacked buses in njtransit giving private bus monopolies free buses to use against us. why do y ou suppose our transit system in nj and america is such a joke? because big oil wants you all buying individually and because your so dang vain you don't wanna have to sit next to your fellow citizen etc. etc.. your all too good for that. so our kids are gonna choke on our fumes and drink your cancerous water etc. etc. wake up eleanor time to be a true parent and look out for your and all our kids futures. shalom

Who can tell me why camden is a failure? Is it the Democrats who run the place? The Democrat policies in place? What is it that makes Camden fail?

Obama lies and so do his supporters: Obama Supporter Fakes Racism Attack

A young black woman who claimed she was a race-hate victim and had been set on fire STAGED the attack, police said. Police in Louisiana said the woman also scrawled KKK on her own car.

FBI spokesman Kyle Hanrahan said: “The wounds were self-inflicted”.

Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, was seriously burned in the incident, which was widely reported, and remains in critical condition. She called police from a park in the town of Winnsboro on Sunday night and told them three men in white hoodies doused her with a flammable liquid and ignited it for wearing an OBAMA T-SHIRT.

The FBI was called in to assist local authorities because the incident was initially considered a possible hate crime -- the woman's fingerprints were literally found all over evidence she claimed was used to hurt her.

jr, wow sweeping generalization. I wait for a rebuttal on that one. Hey menendez perfect 2 getther, I know this is gonna sound like a big black lie but here goes. Do you suppose black inner cities are failing so much because we have stigmatized the african american population with the slavery legacy and now the "your dumber then I am and are therefore worth so much less then me, or us whites?" for all generations after the slaves? I know, they aren't slaves now etc.. etc.. Pull themselves up from the boot straps etc.. etc.. or My ancestors came here too and we were judged dirty pieces of bleep too and I made it etc .etc. You don't suppose they and america are failing because of all the divisivness all this judging by race, education level, etc.. etc. is causing? If we were intelligent americans we'd know that this house divided is why it's failing. We'd also know that competition is good and normal among species and different races of that species, but cooperation is and will always be paramount. I'd like to ask some one rich enough to visit china and any or all other countries. Do the people seem different over there then here? Is there a higher level of cooperation? peaceful working together? It would appear they have been beating us in education, health care, etc. etc. Why do all suppose that's so? Cooperation or feeling of working together even if it's only a feeling. we have lost that and I guess war is the only way to get it back for you boneheads.

Who started this class war anyway? We all did. All is fair in love and war? Well, better hope our lack of love and fairness doesn't bring on true war among the classes. But if history is our only guide to follow. Do you think they are just gonna give back the foolish people's power we mistakenly have handed over to them? I hope so, but can't wait or count on it. The rich don't live "high on the hog" because they've taken any advantage of you. When the POTUS first says, "We want the wealthy to play by the rules" and then a short time later states that "we want the rich to give just a little bit more," I ask, well which is it? I'll tell you what it is; it's we want the rich to be okay with us changing the rules as we go, thus using them as ATMs. I'm not rich. No where near it. But I'll tell you one thing, I'd be pretty upset if the POTUS asked me to pay MORE than my fair share just because "I have it." That's a load of garbage right there.

Fancy words george. Got any solutions to the $16 trillion debt and $1 trillion budget deficits? Let's just borrow on the Bank of China Credit Card and hand out $1 trillion a year in welfare. Does the debt load taste better because of what it is spent on? Is paying our troops and military to have jobs not worth the same consideration. We should gut the military and give the money saved to the poor....is that it? Screw the others who work too. You make ZERO sense. You never did answer if you wife is a teacher...maybe that is why you are so hostile......she is being held accountable and we no longer pay 100% of her healthcare

According to IRS stats, top 10% earners making over 112k pay 71% of all federal income taxes.....now in NJ, we all know there are lots of cops and teachers and government employees who make that. They are rich didn't you know.

Only liberals can somehow claim that 10% paying 71% IS NOT FAIR

They have to hide behind class warfare because admitting they borrow the money to give out would be political suicide. They need to deflect from the facts because the facts do not support them. It's easier to pretend the debt doesn't matter when you are saying we want to protect Medicare....OK, that's great. I want to protect Medicare but Medicare has an annual shortfall of $500 Billion a year......we ain't protecting Medicare. We are lying about Medicare to win votes.

The U S of A has the best health CARE as far as medical procedures and treatments are concerned. People who can afford the trip or can get a mercy trip come here for complex treatments.
You rarely hear of someone here going to Europe or Asia because doctors can't treat them here.
