Readers' Choice: Staycation Spots
Where do you go for a perfect day trip? Vote in our poll.
Our usual approach to Readers’ Choice is polling you on your favorite places in town only, but we’re expanding our horizons a bit this week.
Summer’s quickly approaching, but you may not be as flush with cash this year. Staycation it is!
Staycation is one of those buzzy words that means different things to different people. Some people staycate strictly at home, lounging about the house. But to us, that sounds a bit dull. Why not get out on your staycation and enjoy one of the nearby areas we’re so lucky to live near?
So tell us, when you’re on a staycation, where is your ideal day trip?
- Philadelphia, with its walk through the nation’s history, great museums and, of course, cheesesteaks
- The Jersey Shore, for sun, fun and Boardwalk treats
- New York City, for a day of culture and perhaps a Broadway show
- The Pine Barrens, to reconnect to nature and search for the Jersey Devil
Vote in the poll and tell us your favorite place for a staycation.

New Hope is a great place to take the family....just a short drive up 95 and you can go tubing, hiking, bike riding, walking along the canal. Shopping and excellent places for lunch, dinner and pinic's.

D M J,
I grew up in Bucks County (Doylestown specifically). New Hope is a great town. A lot of really good restaurants.

Gunnison Beach is a great place to get away and just relax.

The Pine Barrens is/are a tranquil semi-wilderness area very close to home. There are hiking and backpacking opportunities but the best way to explore the barrens is via canoe or kayak. Several outfitters will put you in and collect you at your desired pick-up location. You can canoe and camp at several 'wilderness' campsites, i.e, there's drinkable water via pumps but no flush toilets or showers. The barrens offer very subtle beauty and quiet. There is no more soothing sound than that of wind rushing through the pines. Cedar rivers are clear but red-colored because of iron deposits. Check out river water capacity before you go or you may have to portage around beaver dams. Not recommended for folks who require the challenge of mountains or the excitement and amusements of a beach location.

A word of caution: If you're hiking in the Pine Barrens, it's very easy to get lost if you wander off the trail. If you do wander off, leave some 'signs' to help you find your way back!
