Police Confront Swordswoman at Heights of Collingswood

The incident was resolved quickly and without cause for concern, but the apartment complex continues to battle its share of issues.

Adding to a slew of incidents that have troubled the Heights of Collingswood apartments in early 2012—including a carjacking and the firing of an entire cleaning crew of undocumented workers—police recently encountered a sword-wielding woman who allegedly scratched up the door of a fellow resident.

At 10 a.m. March 25, officers were dispatched to the eighth floor of the A tower at the property in response to a call from a resident that someone was banging on the caller's door. In the hallway, they observed a female carrying a samurai-style sword.

Officers ordered the woman to give up the weapon, which she did without incident. She advised officers that she had been carrying the sword out of concern for her safety.

The resident was later transported to a local hospital crisis unit for psychological evaluation. No charges were filed as a result of the incident.

they used to be decent apartments, but now are trash. Clean it up, raise the rent, and get the trash out!!

They were luxury apartments when they were built about 1950, our mayor promised to return them to luxury apartments when we purchased them in the mid 90's. They were improved but never luxury again. Appears the current owners have let slip back to where they were 20 years ago.

...And the hits keep on coming .. oy vey

Kelly they could raise the rent to $10k a month and that would do nothing but force out the good people. So long as the Heights takes subsidized funding nothing will change. The property is also too open and allows random people to come and go at their leisure (they need a deskman in the lobby and a fence around the property ) ... not to mention that Haddon Twp is falling fast to a Camden-esque lifestyle of accepted open air drug use and trade is only fueling the situation.

Please write letters to Jeff Nash Freeholder to the Camden Parks system and tell him we demand a clean township free of filth and drugs .... too many are already AWARE of what goes on and look the other way!! THIS IS OUR HOME.. KEEP IT SAFE!! :)

Call me confused but where in Haddon Twp. is there an open air drug market and how does it relate to the current problem in Collingswood?

Hi Collingswoodnative, the open air drug use etc is mostly at Newton Lake Park. I regularly take pictures and video and clean up the bottles of alcohol that hsve been smashed n pick up the drug paraphernalia. The worst is the 520 Newton Lake Dr location (shocker, it's located across the street from the Heights) .... Again this is no secret to the Oaklyn police, Collingswood police, Haddon Twp police, Camden County police nor is it a secret to the Camden County Division of Environmental Affairs ... they will all tell you flat out it's a known problem and that their hands are tied because of political bs. ... the only group who are really left in the dark are the general public because it's not in the press and few arrests are made. .... I was just told yesterday though by a CC DOE worker that, "The warts are starting to show"

One road, it seems we both do the same thing but in different areas of Newton Lake Park.

We've had problems in the area of Bettlewood Ave but not to the extent you describe. I've had very good dealings with the chief of police for the Camden CC Parks Robert Colangelo, I've been in contact by email several times with various issues and to my surprise found him very responsive.

Don't know if you have emailed him or Jeffery Nash.

Below is the addy for Chief Robert Colangelo

Patch (or any other news media source) articles prediction in 2012: "Rape at Heights of Collingswood" soon to be followed by "Homicide at Heights of Collingswood".

Wait for it.

Thanks "one road", I should have done better research. I like your idea of putting up a BIG fence around the complex. Then we just need to add cameras and when can start a reality TV show based on what goes on inside. Hmm, what to call it? Oh, I know..."No Survivor".

WOW!!!! This very interesting too hear what is being said been said about the apartments just now as well as in the past!!! I'm a resident of Collingswood have been all my years now alive I'll be thirty one this June!! First off I was a resident of "SUTTON TOWERS" EVER SINCE 1981 now known as "THE HEIGHTS OF COLLINGSWOOD" I was raised there ever since then till I entered the 9th grade then moved down the street!!! "GOOD OLE COLLS" as a former resident of the town and apartment complex everybody should remember "Wheelchair JERRY" god rest his soul!! Well good ole colls isn't really good far as I remember in my years of living out here in this town thing have always been bad in some areas more the just one but that’s beside the point the town and everybody in it knows about those apartments and what has happened over the years inside and out of the apartments uh huh!!! When I resided there back in the eighties kids I went too sharp elementary school told me when we got of some age that there parents never would allow them too come play there cause it was a bad place too be when really it wasn’t my childhood there was great we had two playgrounds too play on and all the kids that lived there back then were good kids really yes we were for the most part I can really speak about the older teenage kids at that time case I was young!!!

There also was a pizza pallor with an arcade called the "THE BIG CHEESE" owned and operated by a resident and his wife and child not too mention the video store slash salon and as well the "SUTTON FOOD MARKET" thing then were great I like too think and as well remember!!! I have an aunt who's children were raised there her oldest is 40yrs in age he went threw all his years of schooling out here and as well my aunt still resided's there at said apartments she has lived in town and at the same building for over 40yrs and those apartments may have been wonderful at one point and time!!! My thing is this there going down hill I'll say for one reason and one reason only I feel bad for saying it but its true not all of the folks that are living there now threw welfare are the problem not all of them but for the most part that is why the apartments are going too down hill crashing and burning bad!!! Like I said yes they once were nice and great as for me growing up there but nowadays there really not how they used too be and yes the park Newton lake is filled with kids from not just the apartments but from surrounding towns and as well Collingswood using drugs and or other thing after dark in that park yes indeed that will never change regardless of whom live in those towers once the complex started renting too low income families like they are now its really gotten too become a hazard too the area!!!

!!! I feel bad in saying so cause not all the families hat are renting threw welfare are the problem it is what it is cause of that as well its jut life everything has a self life and yes the towers are a hazard but its not as bad as it could be really think things could be worst!!! As well there are folks whom live in the complex even when I was a child that have behavioral problems yes there are young and old umm hmm so putting up a fence having a deskmen and or cameras isn't going too solve the problem its only I think and really feel it'll make matters worse cause then the complex will look as if it is a jail, prison, or for lack of better word an institution of some sort which isn't anything good then it'll be just as its already viewed I suspect threw the words I have read in the comments previous to my own as a slum of sorts which its still a beautiful property and as well its a place I see and think of as my birth right my home were my youth was spent and enjoyed so before folks want to give there opinions and comments about the complex think there are still good families of "GOD OLE COLLS" that live there and have family members that still live there an aren’t too happy about what it is turning into r could be turning into okay!!!

Lastly the rent is always going up there when I was a child me and my mother lived in a one bedroom there it was only $525.00 the rent there is gone up tremendously high since then really the two bedroom with a balcony is over 12 hundred if I’m correct so raising the rent isn’t going too make a difference I don’t think so nope and putting a gate around it isn't going too do anything very much either it'll just turn things way worse the guards and cameras I will agree would make a difference safety wise I’m sure yes but all the rest isn't!!!! One more thing drugs and alcohol will always be a problem no matter what really is done unless it is abolished all over the world thank you for allowing me too share!!!

OK Guys; I am a senior; I live at the Heights for about a year now. I am a good person; always was hard working; I am clean; I like peace and quiet; water and trees and everything else in that matter. I am renting senior unit just because after I retired I can not afford a full price. I think that there are more people like me living here. It is very upsetting to me that everybody has bad opinion about people getting government help. I wouldn't survive without it. As the Heights..... my oh my how everybody loves to jump to conclusion. How about some ideas, some solutions? I think that more cameras is a good idea. The fence...hm? not sure but maybe worth trying. Maybe monthly meetings with residents and management would help? Please, do not stash everybody in one pile; do not forget about good people.....

With all due respect 'Senior', I personally do not lump the entire complex into one big pile (and have stated so in the past) As a matter of fact, I believe that most people who reside there would rather not have to deal with these ongoing issues. However being that 20% of Collingswood's population resides in that one complex there is an obvious continuing problematic epidemic that is just escalating. Further it's not just the people who reside in the complex who have to deal with the complex's issues, it's the park(s) and the people who utilize them, it's the children they bring into our school systems (that in of itself is another topic for another day) and the Heights carries the Collingswood name and with that comes responsibility. Because when Google searches are done and people want to do business here, live here etc etc, it's the stories from the Heights that pops up. It's not exactly a reputation or a standard that I think anybody would tolerate.

Again, I don't believe the Heights issues come from folks like yourself 'Senior', I get where you are coming from (particularly the keep clean and quite type, that's a lot like myself) but with Collingswood being such a high rental community it is concerning that the Heights complex is just such a magnet for trouble.

Nobody here is attacking you :)

The fence as a suggestion for safety, I will elaborate on since I'm the one who brought it up.

The fence:There are way, way, way too many 'randoms' who come and go at the complex. There are too many people who DO NOT belong there, they are not living there, they have no family there, but yet they still come and go. I will let you fill in the blanks and connect the dots as to what their business is. I have seen with my own two eyes that people bypass the 'fobs' you have for access to the building as anybody will let anybody in (at all hours) There is no doorman (suggestion number 2 right there) ... and btw, there has always been a doorman at those buildings for decades,, it wasn't until they were made into quasi housing projects that massive cuts were done and the lobby security/desk man were removed. Also that was about the same time that the buildings name where changed as well (A building was Ambassador, B was Belvidere , C was Commodore and D was Dakoda) I believe that pride can be re instituted if there were simple things like this done. (there was also an elevator man and Chevy had a garage for quick repairs underneath the parking garage. There was also a barber shop among other 'useful' services on the terrace.

My suggestions are; Keep out the randoms (which with a fence/gate, the carjacking incident would have been 100% avoided btw) Keep a desk man in ALL lobbies 24/7 .. and btw, all high rises and senior living facilities have them so no 'new' precedent is being started ...And finally, please call our AWESOME PD if you see something not right!!! :)

One road town; no I did not feel that anybody was atacking me; I also think very highly about you and your comments. That's what I like to hear: ideas (no matter how difficult they seem), ideas, ideas....I just do not like people who attack or criticize for the sake of that. I agree that there are a lot of problems here. I woul like to see residents who care about the place they live try TO DO SOMETHING positive that just state point blanc: "I hate it here..." Yes, I only live here one year so I do not know about past glory, I wish it came back...I do not know your age, gender and status; I am at the point in my life that I would not want to move again; also I consider convinience of the complex, beautiful surroundings; charming town; great library and many more .... Please, keep your posts and ideas coming... I feel that you would like positive outcome; at least you are not just complaining because ........

Leaving

4:07 pm on Saturday, April 14, 2012

I have a solution to the problems of Collingswood, I'm leaving ! The police treat stupidity as a virtue, that equals no hope for this area. It is just too close to Camden and nothing will change. Just look at the "Lumber Yard" debacle. This town used to be "up and coming," now it's just crash and burn time. Move out of Collingswood and while your at it if you can move out of NJ like many residents are doing. I'm going to Bucks County where there is still some semblance of normalacy. I can't wait to get out of here.....marking my calendar. Good Luck with this mess.

I live in the Heights, and they are HORRIBLE. My car was scratched, scraped, dinged and more over 40 times. They have everyone from Camden moving in here. And they don't care what happens to you. Just last month, in the B building, there were 3 women found dead over one weekend!! They didn't tell me, one of the elderly tenants heard from someone living near the dead womens apartments. Luckily, I'm moving o. the first, but I warn you, DO NOT MOVE HERE!! They will tell you how good it is upon signing, but the elevators never work, and you get robbed in the stairway
