Collingswood 2nd Saturday, the monthly, open-air street festival showcasing local artists, musicians and their work, is looking for some fresh blood.

This month, amateur cake artists are needed to round out the "Art of the Cake" decorating event. Still seething because you haven't yet been asked to appear on the Food Network? Now's your chance to make the naysayers pay—in cold, hard Collingswood cash.

Led by students from The Art Institute of Philadelphia, contestants will create and display confectionery delights inspired by famous works of art. If your fondant Mona Lisa looms largest, you could walk away with $100 in townwide gift certificates.

Runners up will receive $50 and $25 prizes. Entrants must be at least 16, and this event is confined to amateurs only (pro bakers stay tuned: you'll have your moment in the sun this June). Winners will be chosen by Second Saturday guests.

The event takes place at the outdoor patio of Grooveground, where artists will paint along to the action, heightening the Bohemian tension as bakers ice their Guernicas. Their paintings will be displayed at Grooveground throughout the month of May.

Sadly, the cakes will not be served (health code regulations), but local restaurants will be offering a special dessert menu that evening to sate the stomachs of Picasso-piqued passersby. In the event of rain, the Art of The Cake exhibition will be moved indoors to the Collingswood Borough Hall.

"I think people enjoy seeing other people's creativity, especially locally," said 2nd Saturday planner Allison Hunt, of ZUZU Studio. "They want to come around and encounter other artists who are out on the street. We just try to introduce some other events that add to the atmosphere."

As always, the street fair is open to artists, musicians, and crafters who would like to display their wares or perform. There's no charge to set up a table or to play—acts are also unpaid but free to busk—but coordinators ask that interested parties reach out to them first via the 2nd Saturday Collingswood Facebook page or by emailing 2ndsat@collingswood.com.
